I was trying to figure out if I wanted to talk about unnecessary fanservice in games, or needless sequels (no i'm not negative X3)

I decided to go with this one because it sounded less like a feminist rant.

SO! On Topic, there are many games out there that get sequels. Why? Why do they get them? Do they warrant these sequels? NO! They are just shameless cash-ins. I loved Bioshock, Bioshock 2 was ENTIRELY unnecessary. And of course, there will be a threequel (no it hasn't been announced but just you watch)

what about you? Is there a game and/or sequel out there you just want to see vanish?

Well... the way the Sega has given Sonic to a competent developer... I'm not going to name it until I play it and find out whether or not it's bad.

Other than that... Call of Duty I suppose. Yet they are creating newer incarnations, so I can't say for sure. Usually the sequels being produced are enjoyed by people and I don't want that to stop for them as it keeps the industry afloat which effectively makes it possible for more games that we'd enjoy -- in case Call of Duty - or any other random franchise - isn't your particular cup of tea. It should really only stop when it stops being fun and I can't think of any that I played that fits that.

Every 'planned trilogy' should've just been released as one game. Would've saved a fair number of IPs from near complete obscurity. Also forces developers to make better games, rather than doing the "half-ass" dance with each installment.

Except Half Life, Silent Hill (that is, until number four), System Shock (BioShock doesn't count), Portal and a number of more others.
Some games do deserve sequels, but most of them are crap.

OT: I would say COD, Medal of Honor, God of War, Gears of War, etc, etc, etc.

Halo 3-> ODST Sure it might of been a fun game, but I didn't really feel like Halo NEEEEDS another game...from a diffrent angle sure I'm going to get flak for this but the idea of Reach is good. The Halo before it was Halo. Not the "What if Halo was from a different angle"

Star Wars Jedi Academy: Realllllly fun. But without Kyle as the main person, I was kinda turned off.

that's all I got for right now, but I see myself editing this in the future

Two Worlds. Who looked at that shit and and thought another one, this time with a stupid title, was a good idea?

Iron Man 2. Granted the movie was great and a video-game tie-in was a given but they could at least put some EFFORT into it!!!

Unless the original is of poor quality and the sequel does not look like it will improve on it then I do not see how a game cannot "deserve" a sequel. Even then, I find the logic strange because nobody is forced to buy them anyway.

While I will agree that Bioshock 2 didn't "need" a sequel, the same can be said for pretty much every single IP out there with the exception of ones such as Mass Effect where they were always planned as a trilogy.

Yes, because so many of us are disappointed by the fact Portal 2 is coming out...

Posted six minutes ago, and nobody's responded yet? The Valve fanboys must be sleeping on the job!

EDIT: Damn, ninja'd when I was posting! Never underestimate the rage of angry Valve fanboys.

OT: In my opinion, Left 4 Dead 2 was an entirely extraneous sequel. The first one was more than enough.

I can't help but feel that this will soon turn into another Halo bashing thread.

As for games that didn't deserve a sequel, none. Any game, no matter how poor, deserves a chance to improve upon itself. If it doesn't improve, don't buy the sequel. Simple really.

... none of those were planned trilogies.

I'm talking games that before the first game is even close to finished, two sequels are planned. Assassin's creed, mass effect, soul reaver, on and on.

Lost Planet. It was a bad idea for a game the first time, it was poorly designed, and horribly horribly written. Making it virtually online only makes it even more annoying. A Dead Rising sequel also seems incredibly unnecessary, especially since they're not even setting it in a mall this time. Tony Hawk's Underground should have never gotten sequelized. Really killed the series for me.

Final Fantasy X-2

That never deserved to be made...
This won it for me. I loved FFX immensely even though many here did not. The idea that they chose my favourite FF for a direct sequel got me so excited.

Then I played it. I could not possibly have come down any harder.
