What older games have you played recently have you felt haven't aged well. Could it be graphics, gameplay, etc.

I recently played Grand Theft Auto 3 for the first time and I have to say the control scheme made it really hard for me to get into. One mission required me to shoot people and I couldn't aim so I got tired of playing after so many attempts.

What are your's?

Duke Nukem, Ahahahahaha!

No, seriously, Duke Nukem. I don't understand the hype. I played it 18 years ago and wouldn't touch it now. All these young adolescents are going crazy over nostalgia for a game they've never played. It may just be the best marketing dupe ever.

Now with poop!

FF7 graphics wise. I mean the gameplay is still great but... GEEZ that game needs a facelift. FF1 through 6 benefited from 2D graphics since they always stay pretty timeless. FF8 and 9 are looking pretty old too, but not nearly as badly as 7 does these days.

I played Duke Nukem probably in 1999 and I didn't like it then, don't care for it now.

The one that sticks out to me most is FFVII. The core of the game is still good to this day, but the visuals make it nigh on painful to play.

Freedom Fighters and Pikmin. I found both to be very dull, well actually completely crap. It's interesting how that works, since both were apparently quite excellent back in the day. And I usually DO like trying out old games (love FFVII), but it didn't work with these two.

GTA 3 wasn't very good even when it came out. Banging and then killing a prostitute was an interesting option, but the game itself was quite boring and empty.
Name games you loved so people like me can tear into them.

... Granted I agree with the GTA 3 examples. It really rode purely on sandbox tomfoolery when there was little in the industry and being "mature".

As science has shown us, Sequels kill franchises.

The only sequels that I have enjoyed are
Halo 2 and 3
Gears of War 2
Half Life 2, ep1, and ep2
Portal 2
L4D2
TF2
[hey, is it too obvious i'm a valve fanboy?]

all other sequels blew ass IMO, and have ruined their franchises

There is one downside to (old) 2D graphics: They're usually made for one and only one resolution and/or aspect ratio - which is a pain on the eyes on 23" widescreen monitors, fullscreen and windowed alike.

It's why I regretted my Steam purchase of the Commandos series. It's just unplayable.

Thank god there is a multires mod for Diablo2.

This isn't a thread about sequels. It's a thread about games that aged badly.

Morrowind comes to mind. The combat was annoying back then and time has not sweetened it, and the hilariously bad animations and stiff controls are pretty hard to overlook.

And, of course, the graphics haven't fared to well either.

Still enjoy the game, though.

All other sequels ever? You've checked them all? :p
But seriously, that's a huge generalisation. And it's not like the list of sequels you like is small either. Sequels frequently kill book or film franchises, but it's a lot less true in games.

OT: Deus Ex.
Pretty much any Tomb Raider game you care to mention
And any pre-DS pokemon game, when weighed up against the newer ones. The seemingly small changes to the user interface etc... have made a huge difference

Yeah, I picked up GTA III & Vice City. Only got through a sniper escort mission with a slow-down cheat... gave up not long after. Just watched YouTube videos to get the story for each.

Wolfenstein 3D had a similar problem on the PC, as it didn't let you use strafing keys. Quite playable on the iPhone though (Doom's controls sucked on the iPhone though).

Check out the Morrowind Overhaul. I recently installed it and I must say, it made a HUGE improvement in the visuals of Morrowind. It's really revitalized my current Assassin in Morrowind.

Amen to that. I'd even go as far as say that most games from the N64/PS1/Saturn era look awful now...except for the games on PS1 that don't use 3d graphics (games whose art style looks like the snes/genesis games)
