I really have to echo other sentiments in this thread. Unless there's evidence of fandom "ruining" a game by influencing a game design change, how is the game "ruined" for you? I can see if it's a multiplayer, or especially MMORPG game where the community may have a direct pipeline to the design team to change mechanics. But if it's a single player game and I enjoyed it, the rabid fandom may annoy me but it will hardly "ruin" the game for me - the game's going to be the same no matter what.

On the top of the list, I must place Halo.
Many people I've come across have forgotten that it actually DOES have a good storyline.
Also on my list: Pokemon. Its fun. End of story.
It was the only video game that permiated all forms of media to such an extreme. This fame among the game lay man has earned it much hate and a nebbish fanbase.
Also up here are games like DDR and Guitar Hero, for being an extreme example of the "Wally Wavedash" syndrome. Nothing ruins your fun quite like a trained pet spider.

Anyone else have a personal list they'd like to share?
Imho the only thing good Halo has in terms of storyline is the ironic nature of the forerunners' act regarding the Flood. Beyond that, it's just Star Trek mixed to Aliens with the same we're all humans stuff and less alien species.
It's actually empty.

Well it is "guilt by association". While gameplay does not change things that become associated with any specific game that are unpleasant do.
For example if people listen to nothing but gabber about "Pac-Man" until they are sick of it. When they themselves sit down to play "Pac-Man" they will be reminded of those gabbering annoying fools and that bias will be unleashed on the game.

Thus fanboy/girl-ism can ruin a game.

It's the same backlash that occurs with popular music and television.

I think no amount of reiteration can express how much Halo's fanboys ruin the game. Far too much of the "OMG HACER U CHEET" mentality and actual quotes.

I'd also like to say MapleStory. When people tell me they think it's a great game, I typically ask if they've played a different game at all in the past year because any game is better. Any game at all. And when you actually try to play it, everyone is such a gigantic ass that it's almost impossible without escalating into a foaming-mouthed rage at how many jerks are surrounding you.

People could make it so that one shot from a pistol into a wall destroyed the entire map!
that...sounds...HILAIRIOUS! but you wouldn't want it in a serious game though.
DMC4 was really ruined by its fans, I once saw a topic in a forum on how the game recieved a bad review. And every other post was one about how the review couldn't have possibly played the game properly.
Hey, some people are just arrogant, you get used to it.

Pretty much all of the "most popular with teenage audiences" games that involve teams of players shooting at each other.
I'll agree with that, but uh, are they really teams in those games? Or just a bunch of idiots, which shoot each other, unless friendly-fire is off.

Guitar Hero 3. Guitar Hero's a good game. But I'm sick of these idiots going around saying: "I can play expert!" with a little to much pride. Oh great you passed Slow Ride on the hardest difficulty. Well so has everyone else.

Rock Band as well. Not hardcore fans but recent fans. I'm in Canada. The game came out months ago. All the regular gamers and I were buzzing with joy when it came out. And it seems the rest of Canadian society has finally gotten over there huge "I drank to much at New Years" hangover and have snapped back to reality. So now I'm pissed off because they're kind of late and they won't shut up about it. I would have put a shotgun between my teeth by now but It's Canada, we don't have guns. So I just have to put up with this nonsense until a new distraction comes out or the holidays come back, whatever happens first. And if it happens at the same time again I will devote myself to becoming King of Canada. King not Prime Minister. And then I will dictate until it never happens again. And trust me I'd be a good dictator. Remember that if in the future if Canada becomes a communist country that I did it.
