What games that you played managed to live up massive hype?

Planescape torment managed to match its hype for me. It has been called The best crp of all time and people claimed it's one best written story in a game. I played way after it came out, I don't have nostalgia for the classic crpg's style of games, and usually don't like them that much gameplay wise.

It is currently on my list of favorite games and it's number one on top my list of the best written games.

You mean your own hype or hype in general? Because for me they're very different, I rarely get hyped from "phwwaaaaoooorr big explosions! It's yet another game from that studio which means you can expect pretty much the same thing except it looks slioghtly shinier, wooooaaaaaaahhhhhh!".

I did get interested in Life is Strange because of it's (to video games) unique setting, but that turned out to be a massive fucking dud. I also got hyped for Witcher 3, which did deliver, although Witcher 2 was one of my favorite games so i was pretty much on board from the start.

Other than that I pretty much only go for the public reception of games after they come out. Before Doom was released i thought it was gonna be shite, then it came out and everyone thought it was great. I waited for a sale and Hey presto, it was great. Don't see the point in instabuying games solely because of marketing. Just seems odd.

Bioshock certainly, and if you say otherwise there will be words between us.

Halo Reach? I remember people liking it and the campaign was surprisingly fun.

Arkham Island. Best of the entire series, best Batman game of all time.

Oh! Dawn of War 1-2. Both hyped like shit in the 40k community and both were excellent.

South Park Stick of Truth. It was hysterical.

Left 4 Dead and 2? Maybe? I'm not sure if there was a hype storm around them or not?

For the first one there certainly was a high degree of excitement and anticipation. The second one though kind of... confused a lot of people, given how it came out only a year after the original.

Only games I can think of are games that were exceedingly close, but missed the mark in a few significant areas.

Oh wait, one exception does come to mind. Vermintide. While additional content for the game has been slow, and the game can get a little repetitive, the overall game experience and design was almost perfectly executed.

Oh please, FF6 was superior in every way!

And on Dark Souls, wasn't the whole thing that there was no hype? Small little developer with a barely heard of game that turned into a cult hit?

Not counting hyped classics but games that I actually waited- and was personally hyped for?

- Metroid Prime 2: Echoes
- DOOM
- Wolfenstein: The New Order
- The Witcher 3
- Halo 3 (fight me)
- Pillars Of Eternity
- Alien: Isolation
- BioShock: Infinite
- Red Dead Redemption
- Batman: Arkham City
- Left 4 Dead 2
- Uncharted 2
- Deus Ex: Human Revolution
- Telltale's The Walking Dead: Season 2
- Telltale's The Wolf Among Us
- The Last Of Us, technical issues be damned.
- D&D 5th Edition, yeah I'm counting it.

Yeah that's a lot of games. Maybe I either have a good hype-intuition or I'm just an upbeat person when it comes to these things.

Lots of games also came close, like XCOM, Dishonored and The Banner Saga, but I won't count them as they still they didn't hook me just enough that I rushed through them. There's also a few that would've been mentioned if I wasn't really annoyed with their endings, notably Deus Ex: Mankind Divided and Mass Effect 3.

The only game I bought after reading about it in a PC gaming magazine was Divine Divinity, it came with a demo disc aswell so I was pretty much set, been a Larian fan ever since. It got hype in cRPG circles.

I bought a PS2 just to play Persona 3 and 4 (at first, got more games) because I dig urban fantasy and I heard a lot about the series, so I guess that counts double for selling me a system.

Too many to list and go to any detail with (I tend to know what I like and hype myself correctly) so I'll just go for the latest one, that being Persona 5.

I fully believe the game will be the one all other Jrpgs get compared to for years to come. It'll set a new standard. The sheer attention to detail combined with massive amount of content and a gripping story about justice all merge in utter brilliance.

Gears of War 2 from what I remember, one of the best sequels to a game ever.

I can nominate:

Command & Conquer: Red Alert 3
Dead Space
Gears of War 2
Halo 3
Halo: Reach
The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess
Mass Effect
Perfect Dark
Resident Evil REmake
Resident Evil 4
Resident Evil 5
StarCraft II

Not saying these are necessarily the best games in their series/genre that I've played, but they're the ones I remember being hyped for, and in my case, that hype was rewarded in these examples.

Alright...with those more common games out of the way time for big two controversial ones that are very much personal opinion and don't go along with the common consensus.

Dragon Age 2

I feel the need to point out that I'm among the exceptions who LOVED this game and felt it was just as good as the original. With the passing of time I only found myself enjoying this game more. It now far exceeds the original in my eyes and I genuinely consider it a title worth comparing other RPG experiences against. I realize that this game is probably a 5/10 experience for most so don't let that taint the rest of my list.

Diablo 3 (pre-Real Money Auction House Removal)

Yeah, you read that right. I'm among the 1% that actually LOVED the RMAH concept and wished it would become a part of other games after having experienced it in Diablo 3. Setting that replay value portion of the game aside I was just blown away by how FUN D3 was compared to D2. I loved how leveling had meaning and introduced so many new powers and options. I loved how you could play where you wanted instead of having to farm specific mobs or bosses for content. I loved how convoluted systems like Runes and unfun charms were taken out of the game. I loved how the auction houses removed the mass grind element out of the game in order to experiment with mediocre stated versions of sets and gear. D3 has a bad launch but it didn't take long for this game to exceed my expectations. Unfortunately the game is a completely different beast now and while the masses probably like it MORE...I stopped playing. Such a shame.

Hm...

Kingdom Hearts comes to mind. No one thought that would work, but everyone couldn't wait for it to come out. And when it did, boom!

Final Fantasy X. The first Final Fantasy on the PS2, and one of the first games I remember that people were saying really showed off what that system could do.

Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. I still remember so many kids in middle school comparing notes of where they where, what they had found, and the game being everywhere.

Diablo II. Enough said.

Uncharted 2, although for me personally it wasn't this game changing experience, but that's because I didn't play it until the third one was right around the corner.

And those are all I can think of that truly matched the hype that was surrounding them before they launched. I know a lot of games that became surprise hits, or games that I personally feel lived up to what I was hoping they'd be (The original Mass Effect trilogy, minus that ending, The Last of Us, Dead Space 2 just to name a few), but those games are the only ones I can think of that were like, "Yeah, we're that good."

--Minecraft of course, though I already had the game for a while when the real hype started. (buying it in beta for cheaper and all that.)

--Mass Effect 1. I thought I wouldn't like a sci-fi third person shooter/rpg like that at all. But hearing all the hype around it I decided to try it anyway. And I loved it so much I finished one playthrough in 2 days, and immediately started another.

--Witcher 3. When it comes to story, feeling of the world and side quests it's still my number 1 game.

--AC4: Black Flag. It was exactly the kind of pirate game I wanted when it came out, not counting the 'modern day' segments.

--WoW. Yea...you've heard this story plenty of times before most likely. Didn't understand the hype and I had my own other mmorpg's. Then I finally caved and bought it. And was hooked for the next...4 years or something? Playing like 6~8 hours a day. And I'm still playing it! >.> Though only 1~3 hours a day usually.

--ARK: Survival evolved. The game has become...rather mixed these days. But when it was first put on early access it definitely deserved it's hype.

I've not kept up to date with Persona 5 at all and I would love it if this was true but personally doubt it'll beat the sheer perfection that was Persona 4. Hey at least they have actually made Persona 5 instead of Persona 4: Another Fucking Spinoff Please Stop. It was only a matter of time until they'd have retroactively ruined the original, the fighting games were cutting it close as it was. Labrys saved it for me really, Labrys and especially Shabrys were the highlights.

Speaking about hype for games that haven't come out yet, Nier Automata looks sick as FUCK. I took a quick look over some of the videos of the guys who have their hands on the JP release and it seems like it indeed is fuckin' fantastic. I'll watch a recap video of the previous Nier game/s at some point too just in case I need the story.

Oh and i'm super fucking hype for the PC release of Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3 this week. Holy shit, the hypest game ever made finally makes it to PC after all these years. To me at least, it's the single game that popularised comeback mechanics for nearly all fighting games to come out since. Of course no other comeback mechanics are as broken as Marvel's very own X-Factor which is a VERY good thing. X-Factor was so broken, there was a common strat where you'd let two of your guys die and just 3v1 the guy's entire team. You'd see someone like Strider or Wesker in the 3rd slot on his team and you'd just brace for cheese the entire game. Fuckin' amazing. Can't wait to bring Phoenix Wright and my girl X-23 back out into the field, i'm getting hype just thinking about it.
