top on my lists are

1. portal
2. borderlands
3. world of goo
4. team fortress 2
5. left 4 dead (but not l4d2)

each of these games are pieces of art the way they teach concepts and introduce ideas. the way they select the art and sounds for the game, full voice acting. (with the exception of portal). each of these are a shinning beacon that represent the epitome of quality that the video game industry should strive for. instead of relaunching titles like call of duty and halo (thankfully that is over with... or is it).

red dead redemtion too... thanks for reminding me

Starcraft.
It is basically a sport in some places, so I'd have to say that.

I've been replaying Red Dead Redemption lately, and I just can't get over how good it is. So that, I guess.

System Shock 2

for some reason, just being able to play it and understand what's going on makes me feel smart

Haha well that makes one of us! I'm walking through the ship and suddenly monkeys are everywere flinging magic at my face. Fun times were had on the multiplayer mod of that game :D

For me its got to be any Valve games, they are just beautiful in design and story. Oh and Vampire the Masquerade Bloodlines. Fantastic game it is

i for one have never been blown away by the game play value of bio shock, call of duty, halo, or GTA,

what i mean is what games do you think are a shineing example of what the industry should strive for, not your favorite games. one of my favorite games is GTA but i dont think that it is a good example to show to some one who has never played a game in their life, its just a bad example of the video game culture.

I would like to think that every game you own should make you a proud gamer nonetheless but, if you must get down to the nitty gritty.

Shadow of the Colossus
Okami
Flower

I like to be pretentious hence my choices up there =)

I'm more proud of what gaming can achieve when it gets away from the "kill the bad guys" mentality that's marked it since its earliest days.

Games like SimCity 4, Tropico, most games in the "tycoon" genre (at least the ones that are any good), even games like Minecraft that make the player take a look at the worldspace after hours and hours of play and say "Wow. I built that, and it's AWESOME. But it could be even better---back to work!"

I like a good violent game once in awhile (or, if it's Fallout, remarkably often these days). But I like my builders and simulations far more.

Demon's Souls. This game reached me in a way nothing else ever really has. There's just something about it. It's so simple and yet so deep. I love exploring a hostile environment and no game does that like Demon's Souls. It's one of the few games I replayed almost immediately after completion. There's something about it's tone as well. The game is constantly trying to murder you but the tone isn't angry. Everything in the game feels kind of serene. It's violent but it feels different in a way I can't really describe. The game is, simply put, a masterpiece. I eagerly await Project Dark.
