I'm relatively new to PC gaming. Occasionally, my gaming pals will mention games that they expect everyone to have played and enjoyed, causing me to feel pretty left out and clueless. I know my way around newer gaming titles but I don't know nothing about the 'Old Classics"

So, Everyone, What's that one classic PC game that I just have to play?

P.S: I'm basically into all types of games from FPS to Strategy games.

I'm not a PC player, so this list will probably suck, but I'll try.
Portal and Portal 2.
Modern Warfare 1 (maybe 2).
Deus Ex (new and old).
The original DOOM. If nothing else, you cannot walk past DOOM.
Both Half life's.

DOOM.

I still find it amazingly fun after all these years.

It has such wonderfully unique and simplistic, colorful design - and the levels are ingenius with all their hidden pathways and secret rooms.

Starcraft and Starcraft 2 I suppose.
I enjoy Civilization 4 myself.
Hitman: Blood Money.
Diablo II.
Bastion is pretty fun.

There are plenty of things you could play.

Some fairly newer good titles include Bioshock, Starcraft II and Portal 2. If you're looking for something a little bit older then Fable: The Lost Chapters is a great title.

I've got some older ones and some newer ones to add: Baldur's Gate 1 and 2, Warcraft 3, Half-Life 1 & 2 + the episodes, Portal 1 & 2, Starcraft + Broodwar expansion, Starcraft 2, Command & Conquer Red Alert, Grim Fandango, Diablo 2, Batman: Arkham Asylum and of course Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. As a gamer you should have played these at least.

@Yggdraz0r: I love your avatar! "Why so Sinterklaas?" :D

My answer to this question will remain the same cross platform.

None.

...As for games that are popular? The list is literally MASSIVE and different for each group (of people).

So, to be much more helpful than above, I'm gonna poke you in the eye with a stick, and quote:

Try those first. I don't know what they are, but try those.

Fallout New Vegas is my favourite game of all time. Besides that I'd give all the Half-life stuff a go.

But... above all else... everyone in the world... MUST... PLAY...
Just kidding it's PORTAL

The first Halo, maybe the second if you want to. The multiplayer itself is worth it since everyone has modded it to include extra guns and vehicles.

Oblivion with mods
Fallout 3 with mods
Fallout NV with mods (something says I like mods)
Dawn of War
Witcher and Witcher 2
If your PC can handle it, Crysis.

Hey I have a cool idea, maybe you could go through all the lists and compile them at the start? It would be interesting to see the whole list, and it'd minimize getting repeats.

Anyway.

Mass Effect 1 and 2. Kotor 2 (maybe 1), SFC3 (don't bother with the first couple). Portal 1 and 2, Half life 2, Counter Strike: Condition Zero (only version with single player campaign, and imho, has the best gameplay, better than the HL2 engine) - Get the orange box if its cheap, Team Fortress 2 I hate though, wouldn't reccomend it.

An odd ball game I love, include Midtown Madness Chicargo edition... I'm sure there are many more that even I've played that just doesn't come into mind

Wait, I thought this was about "old classics". A lot of these games that have been mentioned are far from being "old" (and "classic" as well, but YMMV).

Anyway, the King's Quest series, or at least the first 6 are definitely classics. The 6th is the only one that can be easily enjoyed today without nostalgia goggles, but the others are good too, if you can handle their age. You could try the Space Quest games too, if you're more into sci-fi than fantasy.

The original X-Com and the first 2 Fallouts are "must plays" as well.

minecraft.

edit: oh old games. well heroes of might and magic three is a must play i think. you can download it off good old games. dont even bother with the campaign though, just create a scenario and randomly generate maps for infinite fun.
