Are there any games that you can just keep on going back to no matter how many times you've played them & completed them, no matter how old they are and no matter how many new games with better HD graphics etc etc there are as alternatives?

For me, the two games that keep me coming back over and over and over again on any console, pc, handheld etc I can play them on is Abe's Oddysee & Exodus, Oddysee being the first game I ever actually OWNED, simply because it still looks gorgeous, its aged well, it still has it's puzzle aspects that I enjoyed as a child and it's still as hilarious to play as it was when I first switched it on.

The other game is Populous, my favourite strategy game of all time, what I would do for Bullfrog to come back and make more Populous games of the same calibre.

These two games I've played on PS1, PC, PS2, PS3 & PSP and yet still, neither of them have ever gotten boring :D I haven't played them on Xbox or Wii yet because they aren;t available, but if they were, hell yeah!

When I got back into gaming with the PS1 in 1997, Doom was the first game I bought, and it's still my favourite game of all time (on the pc these days.)

Sure, every other shooter in existence looks better and has more sophisticated controls, but for pure gameplay Doom has no equal, and the huge complex levels put most modern shooters to shame.

It's far from my favorite in the series, but the graphical style of Wind Waker makes it look as if it could have been made this year.

Timesplitters: Future Perfect. Looks good enough for me. Actually, I prefer those graphics to the coffee filter crap going on now. And, the gameplay is so much better as is the humor, than in many of today's games.

Mario Bros. 3 on the NES and Super Metroid on the SNES.

Timeless classics, those.

Every time I pick up Mercenaries one or MOH: Frontline I can't put them down without beating at least one level.

Unreal Tournament 2004. Still better than FPS's today and still just as enjoyable as on release. Also, Unreal Championship 2. Why are there no games made like UC2 today? It's fucking amazing and actually requires some form of skill online, especially when there's a fuckload of variables for you to use to kill someone/defend yourself. I hope they release it as a classic/arcade, maybe then people will play it again. Until then, I will continue to play with bots that predict my movement path from the other side of the map. I. Will. Be. UNSTOPPABLE.

The old 2D Worms games. I have Worms 2 from 1997 and it works perfectly. It's not like you need a stellar graphics card for them, to be honest, and the still pose a challenge and have some pretty tricksy AI.

Heroes III, there are lots of really old games I still play, but in all their perfection I can notice some minor technical issue and you love them and play them but they are getting old, but with Heroes amasinglly hand drawn graphic and brilliant sound, it can never happen.
