Ever notice that some games tout breath taking visuals, but when you play it, while it doesn't look bad, the graphics don't really blow you away? One that comes to mind is Gears of War 2. The box said "The next step in high definition gaming" or something like that. Well I played it on a 1080p 42 inch TV and I thought the game looked kind of under polished. I have seen better looking games from the technical standpoint from all 3 graphically strong platforms (Those of course being 360, PS3, and PC).

What other games have you noticed do this?

I don't disagree with you that Crysis practically was almost all about the graphics, but are you seriously saying that the graphics were underpolished? They still are some of the best you can get.

I think it was just a knee jerk reaction on his part, depending on your rig it goes from lackluster to photo realistic, so... I'm guessing he ended up on the short end of that range.

Far Cry 2's graphics weren't anywhere near what I'd expect from this era of gaming. The same with Fallout 3 really. I mean, Oblivion pre-release stuff showed that there was a lot more potential from the engine, but as of Fallout 3, most of it isn't really implemented.

Basically all PS3 launch games. Some looked good, others, not so much, but still, Sony was hyping this thing to where the 360 wasn't even supposed to be competition when talking about graphics. And still, it hasn't shown any proof that it's leaps and bounds ahead of the 360, and never will this late into the game. I'm not hating on the PS3(my game collection is almost as large as my 360 collection), I'm hating on its creators for under-delivering.

Arkham Asylum, PC version.

I waited an extra month so Nvidia could do their amazing improved graphics and "PhysX" bull crap.
The result? Oh joy, papers fly around when I run over them, WORTH THE WAIT GUYS!

Prototype. The graphics weren't bad, persay, and they weren't the most hyped portion of the game. But every single cutscene showing those stilted models and the really poor animations just killed immersion for me. The playable parts were fun, which I guess is more important, but seriously. Mass Effect had better models and came out two years earlier. So what gives? Graphics should not be so noticeably bad that they draw you out of the game, and the cutscenes were just horrendously under polished given the quality of games lately.

Gears of War is a good example. The graphics were good, but not that great; and the 2nd one weren't much better. Some people kept refering to them as the best graphics in the current generation, but I don't really feel it.

Another example to me is the new Prince of Persia. The graphics were pretty hyped, and they looked really nice in released screenshoots, but during the game you could see that the camera in those screenshoots was set in a way to hide the really pixelated (and really common) textures.

The Conduit.

I know that's petty saying that about a Wii game but I mean by god Okami was 1000x better through its water colors and that wasn't even originally a wii game.

Not sure. I rarely pay attention to hype. I feel people underhype the Wii's capabilities (the games look just fine to me), but that's about it.

I'd probably say that Perfect Dark Zero was bad for that, you look at the box, and the only thing anyone mentions is graphics...

Not only that, but the PC version in minimum graphics ran worse than Crysis in Ultra High settings.

This may start a flame war... but if you play games for graphics you're just sad. Gears looks fantastic to me... I suppose the only game I could notably talk about the graphics in would be Crysis or some of the Final Fantasy entries.

But really, I'm way more impressed by physics and rendering speeds than I am by graphics. Come on people, Yahtzee already said it... we're about as real as graphics are going to get for the time being, why do we keep insisting on better graphics? So long as it doesn't look like ass we should shut up about it.

Not quite the point. We're just talking about games that over-hype the graphics. Not talking about them killing the games.

The graphics were overrated? The graphics weren't never hyped very much from a technical standpoint, and the water colors kind of graphics were really nice.
