Y'know, it's great when you play an awesome game and want to talk about it with people.

What kinda sucks...is when people answer "you only just played that?"

I'm betting few of us are millionares, though, so you've probably put off many a game for ages, but which ones did you literally pick up years after all the hype died?

I ask because today I finally took a risk with my confusion at tech specifications, and got dawn of war, and my god, it kicks ass. More than I had even expected. The animations, graphics, sound, all help to immerse you into the warhammer 40k universe, and the gameplay is tactical, but not hard to get your head around, even for someone who normally sucks at RTS'.

I reeeaaally picked this one up late. Let's see...as I know of, there have been three expansions to dawn of war 1, and a sequel. With multiple expansions to that. All since the game first came out. Still, may it continue to stand the test of time.

Same.

I'm generally an xbox gamer but I picked up Knights Of The Old Republic about a year ago for my laptop on a whim and I literally nearly lost my life (and one perfectly servicable girlfriend) to it. Sure, the graphics weren't that great nowadays but good gameplay is good gameplay.

Almost everything tbh

I have a large backlog, like many genres including those that are hard games and are thus timesinks plus I generally go out of my way to avoid hype and trends. Ofc it means I often can't join in with dicussion with other gamers about what they're playing atm, but my gaming tastes are too fickle for that

Total War.

I ignored it for just about a decade, finally caved in and bought Shogun 2 even though I'm not a fan of RTS.

Turned out to be a fantastic game that I've spent hundreds of hours playing, and now I've gone back and picked up previous ones and had a blast.

I consider these great finds and it reminds me to keep a more open mind about genres I typically don't like, occasionally games rise above their genre or just hit the right note.

Knights of the Old Republic. Only played it last year because it was on steam for like $2.50.
Best. $2.50. Ever. Spent. EVER.
Felt kinda wierd, since I already knew the twist and played it after playing the likes of DA:O and ME.
So it was interesting to see some techniques that they used in other games show up again. Also how they subtly hint at you being Revan.

Quite a lot of games, especially Ocarina of Time, which I played for the first time when I got it free with Wind Waker

Dawn of War and tech specifications, eh? I first played that game on a machine with an 800mhz CPU. I don't even know how I coped. Or how it coped for that matter.

I suppose my only big late entry would be Deus Ex. I played HR first and enjoyed it and then went through the original. I also managed to go into the original Bioshock 2 years on whilst completely avoiding the spoilers.

Well FFXI was my first in the series, and loved it. I have since been going back through the older titles that I never gave a shot, as I had never really given the RPG genre a shot, and am finding a lot of fun!

Well I still haven't picked up the newest Ass Creed or Mass Effect even though I've been with those since the very start.

I think what really answers your question for me is Deus Ex. I picked up HR about 6 months after it came up as kind of an impulse

This happens to me all the time.

I discovered the STALKER series when all 3 parts had already been out, Mass effect i started playing when 2 had already been out a few months.

Advantage of being late to the show for me is when you done the 1st game and want more you can jump straight in the sequal since its already been released in most cases. So you can go on a frenzy of playing through them all.

I've only just played psychonauts; though, to be perfectly honest, I'm usually about two years behind on games (makes things a lot cheaper, I have found, especially as a PC gamer)

I just played Halfe Life 1, 2 and the episodes last year...like, late last year. I'm talking October.

I played STALKER:SoC and CoP around the same time. I've never had so much fun pressing the quickload button before >.> I died a fuck ton...

I first played ME1+2 in August.

I first played Portal when it was given away for free a couple years ago.

Fallout 3 and NV were both first played by me in December.

Played the first Deus Ex in I think June last year.

The first time I played Fallout 1 was when GoG gave it away last month.

I recently Stumbled Upon Zork in...maybe February?

There's probably plenty more, considering my family got it's first computer only 5 years ago, and the first gaming capable rig 3 years ago.

Morrowind. played it last month for the first time, even though my brother bought me the GOTY edition for pc like 5 years ago :/.

I remember when the episodes for Half Life 2 came out, and I said to myself I'd wait for Episode 3 so I could play half life 2 again and all the episodes in a row.

Yeah, i'm still waiting xD.

I only got my PS3 about a year and a half ago so lots of the games I first got for that. More recently though, the Bioshock games, I got them about 3 weeks ago and I've realised what I was missing out on...

Everything. I had a dinosaur of a computer till 06. I mean DINOSAUR, it was roughly my age. Then I got a slightly less dinosaur-ish computer, and had it till... 08. When I got a fairly okay machine, that let me catch up, until my careful care killed the video card, so I got this beast last year.

Eveyone I know is always going on about the Sonic series. So after two decades, I finally got around to playing a couple last year. I'm not a fan of Sonic. I also got Morrowind on PC last month and have spent ages playing that.
"Dude, did you know, in Morrowind, you can do-"
"Found that out ten years ago, shut up."
"...sadface..."

Just got psychonaughts(humble bundle) It's been amazing so far. But I had to give up in the Meat circus.

That stupid fence jump is just no fun. It's hard to believe how badly designed that whole level is compared to the rest of the game.

I'm tempted to get into Heroes of annihilated empires now that it's on GoG.com. So that would probably count too.
