So, I love music. Like, a lot. It's probably the single easiest emotional manipulative tool for me in any medium. You put an awesome, dramatic song over some event, and I will likely have awesome tears streaming down my cheeks.

And I love when games have it included as an actual force to be reckoned with. But, I've never seen what I always wanted to see, which is a game ABOUT using music to save the day. The closest was Brutal Legend, which was good, but was less rock, and more hack and slash, with a rock motif.

Like, when I saw this trailer

I was SO fucking pumped. I wasn't even a fan of the franchise, but when the trailer made it seem like you would literally be saving the day with the power of rock and roll, to do things like destroy asteroids, doomed to smash into the earth, I was SO on board for that shit!

But, the game ultimately was just a pattern matching game, with generic backgrounds. No "story" like that to it.
I recall, when I recently replayed Warframe, that there is a storyline for one of the particular Warframes, that was probably the closest I've seen to what I was looking for.

Short version, the Warframe that is about music, is tied to an AI spirit helper thingy, that is being locked down by another AI, and the quest line is about you finding the various notes of the song, and ultimately playing the song via a platform jumping puzzle, to literally shatter the chains binding this AI, and set it free with the power of music. And I will give the devs of that quest line credit, they put a lot of effort into making it feel pretty badass. Sadly the execution of it got a bit tedious, and having to repeat it multiple times due to platform issues, lessened the kick of the dialogue taking place. But it was really cool.

And I want some games like that. But I don't know if there even ARE any games like that. It seems like a pretty easy thing to include in something like GH or Rock Band, but I've never seen it done? The 'story" stuff is usually just a concert tour thingy, that ultimately is just you doing the same gigs you always do, but with a record of previous shows to it.

So, are there any games, that kind of feel like Brutal Legend, but are more focused on the music as a weapon ? I'm curious about any examples really, to see if any fit what I'm looking for.

And to clarify, I'm not talking about games where they have a "bard" class or similar. I'm looking for shit that feels like the GH trailer above, or like this.

Wandersong, maybe? Not so much a weapon perhaps, but singing is your primary means of interacting with the world, including platforming, puzzle solving and dealing with enemies.

Other than that, all I can think of is the Dubstep Gun in Saint's Row, but that's really just a gun with fancy effects. Tho it does make pedestrians dance, street lights flicker, and cars bounce like they have hydraulics.

No Straight Roads will have what you crave in that Tim Schafer style.

There is Dante wielding Nevan.

So...Gitaroo Man?

It's a campy and frankly kinda bizarre PS2 game (with some clunky translations to boot), wherein the protagonist discovers he's a destined hero who will save the world by playing his magical guitar.

CRYPT OF THE NECRODANCER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Its on sale too.

I know there are more games where music is at least a weapon but at the moment I am drawing a blank.

I actually own that one. It's pretty damn fun. The music is my kind of synthwave style of tunes, and the gameplay is pretty cool.

The art tonelico games have that, although in actually it's more like the song you build is like a limit breaker (and they're more a vehicle for fan service than anything).

How about that PS1 game about raping karate onion or w/e (never played it but seen cutscene).

Elite beat agent? Althought that's again more of a guitar hero game, but the music is integrated into the story.
