Once again Escapist, another question and thought. What are games you have brought or even downloaded that you fully regretted. Something that got you thinking while playing it "WHAT THE FUCK IS THIS SHIT" and even went back to store the next day to get a refund of trade?

Everything I bought in last year's Steam sale. I spent about a thousand dollars on the sale (didn't expect that) and played the games for about an hour each on average. Then went back to Dota 2.

It's been a while now I think about it, mostly I've been renting games before I bought them. I guess this will be back now Lovfilm have stopped their rental service.

Anyway Uncharted 2. I'm okay with linearity but not with this level of scripted experience, it's something I just cannot get on with. I want much more control over how I experience something.

I'll throw in the counter example of something I thought "eh I'll give it a go" and ended up loving it. Demon's Souls. I'm not generally a fan of hard games, but I had to revise that to I'm not a fan of frustrating games that demand fast reactions. I love Demon's Souls in all kinds of ways, that deliberate thoughtful experience with just enough freedom to make your own strategies but not so much as to become aimless... It's fantastic.

Hydrophobia. You get some leniency for being a small studio but that was just broken.

Thief Deadly Shadows. Not because the game is bad, I enjoyed what I did play of it before the locking up on loading forced me to give up but because I didn't read the system requirements to see it has issues with laptops. Totally my fault.

but both of those were very very cheap so even hydrophobia wasn't too much of an issue (I paid $1 or $2 for it). I've had games I've been disappointed in and wish I'd bought cheaper but generally I already know a fair bit about a game before I buy so I've never hated it that much that I would demand a refund.

None. I only buy games that I know I'll enjoy. I actually research games before I buy them, and those that I've gotten for free...well...it's free. If it's broken or bad, oh well. Didn't spend a single cent on it so I don't really care.

Sadly, as a PC gamer, no trade ins, and refunds are rare too and I CBF chasing any up - its more trouble than its worth.
But games that I've sorely regretted getting?
Mass Effect 3
Dragon Age 2
Duke Nukem Forever
Sims 3
Dishonoured
Fortune Summoners
and a few others I do not remember.

Spore. It's the only one, but it's a big one. Mostly because I paid full price for it before the negative reviews came rolling in.

- Brink
- Dead Island
- Far Cry 3
- Kingdoms of Amalur

Those would be the big ones. Obviously they're not the only games that I bought and hated. However, unlike almost all the other bad purchases, these were all made at day-one prices.

Warlock - Master of the Arcane
At first glance it looks like something that could have been really good, maybe even a spiritual successor to Master of Magic. In reality it was an unfinished mess. It's poorly balanced and many of the features doesn't fit together.
It takes more than pretty sprites and hexes to be a strategy game. It takes things like AI and a good rule set as well.

Dragon Age 2
A sorry excuse for a game. A half-arsed attempt at a sequel to DA:O, selling mostly due to hype. Not only did I waste a lot of money on it, I also wasted a lot of time in the vain hope it would get better.

Beyond Good and Evil
An old game that has received much praise. It also looks promising but unfortunately it's entirely unplayable due to the inconsistent and illogical control scheme on the PC port. I imagine this may be a good game on some platforms but controls matter, and those who ported it managed to completely mess it up.

All these games were digital, so no refunds were available.

Spore and shattered union because i bought them and then never played them.

AI war because i didn't read the that it was mostly a multiplayer game. Blazing Angels one Because i found out after the fact that it only played on Winxp and no other(thanks for selling me that lemon steam).

Bought Dragon Age on hype alone and ended up not liking it and dropping it.

And finally the Darksiders games I played the first one got bored and never played them again that was 80 dollars well spent.

Age of Empires 2 HD on steam. I bought it together with a friend so that we could play the Game of Thrones mod with each other, but somehow we can't seem to stay in game together for longer than 5 minutes. The single player is ok, but I bought it for the multiplayer which doesn't work. Also I haven't really bought the game, but I do regret spending 30 euros (+/- 40 dollars) on warframe which is normally free to play. It was a fun game at first, but after a while it gets too repitive and boring. Should have saved that money for a new Ipod or something...

I cannot think of any game that I bought that I hated.

Games that I regret buying at full price for various reasons:

Dead Space 3 - An average 6-8 hour game with no real replay value.
Assassins Creed 3 - The campaign was a good length, but I feel bad for supporting Ubisofts yearly sequel policy.
Mass Effect 3 - Just a disappointment overall. The game-play itself wasn't bad, but it was the worst out of the three.
Fallout New Vegas - I love the game, but at release it was such a broken, buggy mess. Once they fixed it, all was good.
Tomb Raider (2013) - A very good game, but like Dead Space 3 it has nothing to really go back to.
Dishonored - I liked it overall, but found it very frustrating at times, and not worth the full price.
Dragon Age 2 - I don't hate the game, but I felt a little cheated upon release considering all of the hype Bioware built up.
Transformers: Fall of Cybertron - Not a bad game, but nothing special. Again, once beaten it had nothing to replay.
'Splosion Man - Although it was very cheap (160MS points) I have never actually really wanted to play it.
Max Payne 2 and NeverWinter Nights 2 - Both bought on Steam sale and I have never completed them.
Alan Wake (PC) - I played it on the Xbox, bought it during a Steam sale and have never completed it.
Okami - Nice art style, but I felt that it was a very boring game.
Beyond Good and Evil - Interesting idea, but another game that I found boring.

Full price purchase?

Dragon Age 2 or as I like to call it 'the beginning of the end for Bioware.'

There are a few Steam sale deals that I regret buying but since I paid peanuts for them it doesn't sting as much as DA2.

I've never really regretted any purchases, except Dungeon Keeper 2, but that's only because it didn't work.

Games I played for an hour or less before uninstalling:

Dragon Age Origins, Mass Effect, Dead Space, The Witcher, Stalker, Half Life, Fallen Enchantress.

I wouldn't say I hated it, but for me it's The Witcher 2. I'm usually very careful about what games I actually buy and, on paper, Witcher 2 looked and sounded like something I would absolutely love. Then I played it. After a couple of sessions spent trying to give it a chance, I was done. Traded it in very shortly afterwards.

DayZ, fucking DayZ. I originally never wanted to buy the game, but then a friend of mine was all like "Hey Morsomk, come buy this game and play with me, it shall be glorious!". It never was, it was a horribly boring game after the first 45 minutes.

You know, you really shouldn't say nasty things like that... It's not nice!

OT: Max Payne 3

Never has a double meanining rung more true - This game was specifically designed to piss me off. From unskippable cutscenes, to frustrating gunplay, cutscenes changing your current weapon, cutscenes thrusting you directly into enemy gunfire, unbearably unlikeable characters, and nauseating pretentious writting.

And I payed 60 bucks for this!? Thank God for trade-in's.
