While there's some among us who generally like a bit from lots of genres, most gamers I think have those handful of genres they just don't like anything from. For me it's generally FPS, Sports Games, or Arcade Shooters. Yet even in those genres we don't like there sometimes seems to be those titles that stick out, that offer an experience that makes the whole thing worthwhile.

For example, while I hate playing almost any sports game, I ended up absolutely loving a Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3, I played it for hours and hours. It didn't feel like a sports game, it just felt pure fun, no real strategy needed, no in-depth knowledge of the sport, just get on your board and do tricks.

So what games did you like that were the exception to your genre dislikes?

Despite not liking sports games, I generally do like the extreme sport variants such as Tony Hawk (though I stopped at Pro Skater 4). I also enjoy the Mario sports titles, but I'm not sure those count given how drastically different they are from other sports games.

I also hate racing games, but I love the Mario Kart and FZero games. Then again, those two are rather unusual for a racing game.

There's also adventure games, but enjoyed both Amnesia: The Dark Descent (though mostly for the horror, not the adventure elements) and The Walking Dead.

Finally, though I hate RTS games, I did find some enjoyment in Age of Empires 3.

I don't hate sports games, I just don't tend to play them. I do, however, still love NHL '93 on the Mega Drive. I always play it as violently as possible =D

Also, I'm not too keen on the MMS-style shooter but I liked Killzone 2 for some reason. Also Rainbow Six: Vegas 2.

I greatly dislike Turn-Based Strategy. I'm utterly terrible at them. Yet I found myself enjoying Fire Emblem: Awakening, quite a lot.

I also greatly dislike Racing games. Yet Mario Kart(series) has always been fun, for me.

Does SSX count as a sports game? If so then it's the SSX series, and I absolutely loathe sports games. Probably because it's completely unrealistic, unlike normal sports games.

I do not care for most sports games, but I have fun with the likes of the Wii Sports games, because it feels like I actually get to play the sport in a sports game. Mario sports games are fun too, if only because you know in the back of your head that Mario and friends make sports fun by not playing them properly.

I hate military shooters, but I loved Spec Ops: the line. hmm... I also hate sports games, but I had an insane amount of fun playing NFL blitz back on the PS1. I just loved how punching someone in the head was an effective tactic, even when they were wearing helmets. XD

ohh! I almost forgot. It's not really a genre, and "hate" is a strong word, but I've always strongly disliked the fire emblem games (mostly because they attempt to invoke a fairly mature story, but are stymied by nintendo's kid-friendliness, creating quite a bit of tonal dissonance that made games like radiant dawn completely unplayable for me) but I adored FE: awakening. it suffered the same problem, and the core plot was so cliche ridden I tried to avoid paying attentionto it, but the characters were strong, and their interactions made the game wonderful.

Rainbow Six Vegas 2 was a lot of fun. I was always particularly fond of the 500 tactical shotgun, mp5, mp7 and the p90. If you couldn't tell I like being up close and personal :p

OT: hmmmm for me it would probably be DC Universe Online. Part of the reason for me taking a liking to this game was probably because my roommate lives across the country from me whilst not in school so that was one of the few games we ended up playing together. We eventually made our own comic book characters based on the characters we made in those games. We are now actually working towards submitting stories of them to DC and Marvel (you cannot submit content based on anything attached to marvel or dc to each company respectably for copyright reasons or something along those lines).

Burnout
Spec Ops: The Line
Red Dead Redemption/GTA V
LA Noire/The Walking Dead/The Wolf Among Us (Just wanna give a special screw you to adventure games)
Unreal Tournament 2004

I'm not really a shooter fan, a racing fan, or a fan of open world games, but these were pretty great.

XCOM: Enemy Unknown

I hate turn based combat, dice-roll combat, and turn based combat with dice-rolling. (But I love tautology) That being said, I can't say why I love XCOM so much. It has me in a vice and Enemy within is probably my most anticipated release this fall.

EA Sports! BIG!
Yeah, ordinarily I wouldn't welcome this. As a rule, I just don't like sports games. Then I got SSX Tricky for the Gamecube. As much as I raged at this game - and believe me, it was more rage than I can ever express in the English language - I still enjoyed this game. It took serious patience and skill to get each turn, jump and trick just right if I wanted that 1st or that gold medal.

I don't like modern military shooters. I don't hate them with a fiery passion like some, though I can understand why some do. And then there's Spec Ops: The Line. Yeah.

Disgaea. I hated anything turn based but I actually really enjoyed disgaea games. So much so that I don't even mind turn based battle systems much anymore..... but I still don't buy any games that are turn based unless its a Disgaea game.

Fallout 3. Hated shooting games but the VATS system kinda eased you into it in fallout 3 and I really liked the game. I wouldn't say I like shooting games now but I can at least stand to play them if it's 3rd person.

Herzog Zwei penetrated my RTS-proof shield by exchanging that insufferable pointyclicky paradigm for a unit of my own with which I could take direct action whenever I wanted, i.e. making me squad leader instead of general. Also the AI player was dumb

Hostile Waters did the same by letting me take control of ANY unit and give commands with the game paused.

Same. Its not that I'm against strategy games, but they seem so tedious and boring on paper. Two my friends who are into strategy games kept raving about XCOM so I made it my plan to buy it and luckily it became free on psn. It was surprisingly simple to get into and I really liked it. Unfortunately, I'm short on time these days so after playing for two weeks I realized I fucked myself and I didn't want to start a new game so I had to pass on it. I think it got ported to Android so I might have to try it again sometime

I normally detest military shooters but Battlefield 3 (maybe 4) grabbed me because it felt so much closer to a real "military" game. Huge maps, big teams, vehicles, objectives, the teamwork, everything.

Racing and extreme sports I'm not interested in either, but the MX vs. ATV series was remarkably entertaining, tho I'm not sure why... Something about making custom tracks across the countryside with friends was terrific.

Normally I really dislike RTS games and yet I find Medieval II to be one of my favourite games that I have on my PC. The kingdom building and the large scale battles that I can participate in absolutely captivated me. There are few games where I felt the same exhilaration that I did after successfully defending myself whilst outnumbered roughly 2-to-1.
