What are some games that you've enjoyed but that you feel didn't live up to their potential? Games that had some good ideas or interesting mechanics but didn't utilize them that well?

For me, one game I'd like to see be redone is Sigma Star Saga. It's actually an interesting take on the scrolling shooter genre where you enter shooting stages like they're random encounters in an RPG and your ship actually levels up as you fight. Further, you can get lots of options for your shots, what kind of shot, how it shoots, and other effects. There's also a top down part of the game where you're trying to deal with enemies on the ground and figure out how to navigate the terrain and locate options for your ship.

I also rather like the story with the subterfuge of infiltrating an enemy alien race as a human defector, and I like the relationships Recker (The main character) has with the Krill (The name of the alien race).

The problem is that the mechanics lack a lot of polish, there's glitches in places and some things feel unfinished. The options could also use tuning as some of them feel a bit useless and you could end up putting yourself in a no win situation if you're equipped with the wrong thing for this or that fight.

The story also feels like it's not as fully developed as it could be, some things are gone through a bit too quickly and don't get as much detail as they should and they could have done a better job making Recker's subterfuge more believable.

But overall, I wish there were a sequel to this game as I think there's a lot of potential with it.

So what about the rest of you? Any games you think could achieve so much more than they did?

Hybrid Heaven by Konami on the N64. Seriously, who doesn't want suplex mutant bugmen in an underground lab? It's a strange but underrated RPG. Loads of potential.

Picture it. You open to a seedy nightclub in the middle of the night. There's a line of people wrapping around the place, and you faintly hear the music blasting inside the club. The camera pans to the front of the line, focusing on the biggest, meanest bouncer you've ever seen. One by one, he either lets people in or turns them away. That is, until a tough guy gets to the front of the line.

The bouncer can tell, this guy just came here to start trouble. He tells the man he's not on the list. The man tells him to check again. The bouncer tells him to kindly piss off. "You think I'm afraid of you?" the man says, giving the bouncer a light push on the shoulder. "No I thought you were smart. Guess I was wrong," he retorts, wrapping his giant hand around the back of the man's head, slamming it into the brick wall and knocking him out cold.

The people in line start screaming and yelling, most of them run away. The troublemaker's buddies run up to deliver some retribution, but one stare from the bouncer reminds them that it's not worth it. They slink over to their friend, quietly dragging him away. The bouncer starts to walk towards them, but is stopped by the feeling of a hand on his shoulder. He turns around and sees an older man in a suit. "Not you again," the bouncer says.

"I can tell you missed me," says the man in the suit. The bouncer says nothing. "Looks like you're doing pretty well for yourself. You must be making, what, nine dollars an hour?" the mysterious man says.
"It may be a far cry from special forces, but it puts bread on the table. And that's all a man like me deserves," the bouncer replies, sitting down on a nearby curb.
"Now, I don't want to hear anything like that. You may have done some things that you're not proud of, but you did them out of necessity. If it wasn't for you, this whole city would be a radioactive crater right now."
The bouncer says nothing for what seems like an eternity. Eventually, the silence gives way to his grizzled voice.
"I'm guessing you're here for a reason," he says.
"You're a smart man. I know you said you're done for good, but..."
"But what?"
"The media doesn't know about it yet, but... Code Dragon has taken place."
The bouncer's eyebrows shoot up his head.
"You're joking," he says.
"I wish I was. This situation could have catastrophic repercussions. It needs to be taken care of immediately, and you may very well be the only man who can handle it."
"I know, Code Dragon is about as bad as it can get... I can't be the only option though. I've been out of practice for years. You must have some spry young recruit who'd be better for it."
The man in the suit walks up to him, and puts his hand on his shoulder.
"I know you're a little out of sorts right now, but no one else has the gumption to do this. You're the only man I've ever met who's earned my respect both on and off the battlefield. Now, I ask you this as your former commander, as a fellow American, and as a friend. Are you a bad enough dude to save the president?"

^What is this?

I wish they would just finish Legacy of Kain. Plz, and maybe make the gameplay a little better. Thumbs up, no pressure.

Man... Forget Final Fantasy 7, I gotta wonder what a graphically overhauled Soul Reaver would look like.

Zombies Ate My Neighbors as a L4D style shooter, but with all of the wackiness intact. New weapons, new characters, new enemies, new environments, same wacky theme.

Toejam & Earl as a third person 3D action game, or maybe a 3D puzzle platformer. I just want Toejam & Earl in 3D, dammit!

Remake Gauntlet Legends/Dark Legacy for online play, which I believe to be best-suited to arcadey-style games without much of a learning curve. It's just you and 1-3 others, monsters big and small, and monster generators. And food and potions, which if shot the 'narrator' will let everyone know that Blue Wizard is the culprit... and Red Warrior is about to die.

Also, more variety between classes and challenging new levels and bosses for people willing to level past 70 (cap is 100, but you could easily raise that too).

I loved the longest journey but I thought the game looked like ass even back when I first played it after it came out. I also thought the game felt a little rough around the edges in regards to voice work and the ending so I think it'd be nice to see a remake.

Komander Keen, probably my favorite platformer from my childhood. Come on id it's not like you're doing anything better at the moment.

Sounds like he made the gritty 2010s era remake to the intro of Bad Dudes.

2nd on the Legacy of Kain remake the story could use an ending, but that is always an issue with games that involve time travel the damn authors write themselves into a corner.

I really wish they would remake Saints Row 1, absolutely love the story but the gameplay is really awful. The nonsense with having to grind out reputation to move the story along made me quit the game half way through.

[HEADING=1]Xenogears[/HEADING]

Sadly, with the creator so upset and jaded by the treatment of Xenosaga, the promised Xenogears remake will likely never happen. And, before anyone mentions it, I am 99.9% sure that X is Xenoblade 2.

....

Also Final Fantasy 7. THERE, I said it.

Also this. For PS3, so I could actually play it. And, since they'd be remaking it anyway, they could add in female as an option.

Make NeverDead again, but good.

It has good ideas, but did next to nothing with them. And the unfocused mix of combat mechanics just dragged down the more average gameplay mechanics, which should've been easy to do.
I appreciated the sword mechanics, but it completely limited action in the combat.

I like the idea here, but I think it should be more of a twin-stick kinda game with similar overhead perspective. I feel if it were to become a first person shooter, it would be really annoying with the backtracking.

OT: It's hard for me to think of a game I want remade. I usually don't stick with serieses for whatever reason, so I'm not sure if skylanders is anything reminiscent of the original trilogy I gave up on after the horrendous Enter The Dragonfly.

I know the later Crash Bandicoot games were generally shit and would be nice to have a modern GOOD Crash, but I imagine it quite hard to seem relevant and not a cash-in/retread.

I WOULD like a current RollerCoaster Tycoon game that has a similar feel to the first and second, leaning towards the first. The first was an excellent game that I can still enjoy today, second less so, and I can't get into the 3rd.

Master of Magic. Yes, I know that it has several spiritual successors. Some are even fairly decent (Legendary Enchantress). However, none of them quite live up to the wonderful, horribly buggy, laughably imbalanced piece of art that was the original. This is probably the game that I played the most growing up, and is probably one of my most-played games ever.

Drakengard had all sorts of promise. Maybe Drakengard 3 will be worth a damn.

Just what we need on the market. More shooters!

Mercenaries 2 and Driv3r could probably benefit a lot from do-overs- good concepts in theory, but let down by a lack of polish.

This may sound really stupid, but I would love a remade I.M. Meen. I remember really liking it as a child and now that I have children of my own, I would like them to have edutainment games that have actual game-play. In my mind, I would see it as a cell shaded FPS with a modern engine and controls so it doesn't feel like a bad version of Ultima Underworld and I would replace the very non sequitur fixing grammar in a letter and replace it with something more fitting. Maybe the same basic mechanic where you're correcting grammar and/or spelling but instead of being out of place correspondence make them spells, incantations, or recipes more befitting the setting and purpose (klattu barada nikto anyone?).

Also, I would love a new Life and Death game. I played the second one when I was a kid all the time. Subdural hematoma was no problem. Furthest I got in one of the others was moving brain tissue around to excise a tumor when the patient died because I had forgotten to irrigate.

Edit: These choices are my top picks because we already got an X-Com and Shadowrun game. ^_^

I'd quietly get Lord of the Rings: The Third Age remade by Bioware.

Add snappy dialogue to the combat, flesh out the characters, give the players choice, make it six times bigger, and it'd be fun. Or at least, much better than War in the North.
