This has been discussed before, but I figured that I could revive it.

What music do you listen to while you play games (other than the game's soundtrack)?

For me, it depends on the game I'm playing. If I'm playing Fallout 3, I've probably got some trip-hop playing. If I'm playing a game with a competitive online mode (most frequently Halo 3 and Street Fighter IV), then I'm most likely listening to metal, punk, or generic 90s alt-rock.

I tend to listen to either Folk rock or Blues rock. The major bands I listen to are The decemberists, iron and wine, The devil makes three, The black keys. I like these because they keep me calm and level headed while playing instead of metal it may get me pumped but lose my cool and get angry, while these bands kind of keep me Zen and in the zone

The radio is typically on when I play Smash Brothers at uni, so random pop music. On my own, the Gurren Lagaan soundtrack goes well with all the SSB games.

Also, power metal and hard rock sometimes complement MMOs.

I tend to listen to either Folk rock or any kind of mellow classic rock if playing online. I may in fact listen to the game if it's something like zelda that never disappoints in the music department.
or whatever Pandora chooses for me (even though lately it's been kind of confused about what I like).

I usually just listen to the game unless the in-game music is particularly horrible and there's no voice acting.

In that case it depends on what I'm playing.

I've got a mix of Final Fantasy battle themes, Halo music, Gears of War music, Star Wars music, and other various game/movie/anime soundtracks going when I play Gears of War online. Nothing like playing an intense multiplayer match to One-Winged Angel or Duel of the Fates. Talk about epic.

If I determine a game desperately needs a better soundtrack, I'll make my own playlist and tailor the playlist to fit the game (Borderlands, I'm looking at you). I basically just completely redo the game's soundtrack.

It really depends on what mood I am and what game I'm playing. Right now I have the Mirror's Edge ost period. Just played Crysis with that on the background. Usually though it's some abient or otherwise electronic music, or new age. And in some cases if the games own music is very good, like Half-Life series, Mirror's Edge, the C&C series with the Klepacki soundtracks, I listen to those.

Nothing like Viking Metal for racing... or Battlefield 2 if I'm not on Teamspeak... or PvP when I still played WoW... In fact, nothing like Viking Metal for anything gaming.

If I'm playing an RPG with lame ambience, I'll just use the ambience I have.

If I'm playing CoD4v2 multiplayer, then I'd put on some of my metal. Dethklok or Mastodon to be exact.

Double post: I thought I was the only one that listened to Final Fantasy songs!

Seriously? Nobou Uematsu is the John Williams of video games: best soundtracks ever!

Well actually my favorite soundtrack of all time is Chrono Trigger, but Yasunori Mitsuda is kind of hit and miss: Nobou is consistently incredible.
