That's the real question, isn't it?
Unfortunately for the illusion of simplicity that simply asking on a gaming forum may present, one of the best solutions for finding the right gaming rig is doing research; good old fashioned looking at websites, crunching numbers to see which stacks up against the other vs. price, and looking at Wikipedia to figure out what terms and components are that you don't understand or recognize.
If you're from Canada, I'd very seriously reccomend NCIX as the website and dealer of where you buy your stuff from.
Regardless of where you're from, do not buy from Future Shop or Best Buy.

You'll be lucky to get a machine with the absolute top quality for under $1500.

For today, you'll need a:
Quad Processor - Intel i7
Graphics Card - nVidia GTX480/580 (Or ATi Equiv)
6 GB DDR3 Triple Channel RAM.

You can save a bit of money if you build the machine yourself, if not you can look at a few various online dealers like ASUS, Coolermaster, Alienware (I personally dont like to get involved with Alienware).

if your aussie take a look on PC Case Gear [www.pccasegear.com/] so you can do some price comparison of parts.

I would suggest to go with Sandy bridge processor rather then the outdated 1366 socket.. and Sb is dual socket for ram so either buy 1/2/4

If you buy a pre-built; sure.

You can build a top-of-the-line PC for around $900.

EDIT: Also, your specs are incredibly misleading. You only need an i5/X4 and 4GB of RAM, and you don't need a 580.
