Do you feel that you had more fun in your prime of gaming?

Now 'back then' could be interpretted in any way depending on when you started gaming and how often you played back then as opposed to now.

Optional read:

For me, I can easily say I had more fun gaming back when I was younger then I do now, I used to play multiplayer all the time with my brother and friends in the same room, and we often found ourselves playing games longer as well. Thats not to say I don't enjoy gaming now, but I tend to think that with gaming becoming more expensive, developers are less inclined to take risks on games they dont feel will perform well, meaning all those 'silly' games you played for FUN no longer exist, everything is trying to be realistic and 'focused' on the likes on online and achievements. Take GTA and MGS for example, two games that used to be hilarious to play back when I was younger, but the recent installments were very serious with little humour to be gained, or maybe that was just my perspective of them. There are less original games and less games in general to pick up and play. And the funny things is, many games were rather crap back then, glitches, bugs, no online, etc etc, but were still funny as hell.

Back when I was around 10 to 12 I had it easier enjoying games. I could play anything and enjoy it. Now I'm one of those really fastidious gamers who only likes 10% of all games I play. I can't tell if that's good or bad.

It seems like because gaming has been around for quite some time... and because a lot of people capable of original ideas seem to be uninvolved in the gaming industry... games, "Back Then" seemed more creative and 'fun' than games today. Regardless of how you feel, you can certainly agree with me that games are starting to become bland and repetitive, and with few exceptions, actually feel like work.

When a game is no longer "fun", it is no longer a game. Unfortunately, I don't have much "fun" with a lot of today's "popular games".

I enjoy gaming a lot more now because when I was 5 I didn't get to play M rated games.

In contrast my nephew has been weened on M rated FPSs since he was 3.

I think much of the reason is the fact that multiplayer has been removed from many games in replacement for online. Back then, there would be 4 of us crowded around one small screen playing split screen quake or something, and while it was slightly irritating at times being so small and all, it was hilarious. You'd be lucky to get a 2 player game today, split screen is almost none existant and the thing is, many of us actually now have the big tvs to be able to see four player, while back then many of us didnt, lol. There is also the slight taunt by giving us the option to have many controllers, but few or no games to make use of that many controllers.

Even the likes of Tekken 2 and 3 were played endlessly by my bro and I, it would be a miracle if you can get me playing for ages and mastering a Tekken today like I did back then :D

I think it's the culture that gaming has acquired nowadays that has soured the experience for many. Mostly thanks to the internet.

When most of us were young we just played what we thought looked fun, instead of what was hyped up, or what we weren't allowed to play at risk of being classed as a weeaboo or whatever.

This is why I don't allow what's popular to affect my gaming decisions and play what I like.

I play RTS games on consoles, I play Sonic Unleashed, Battlefield Bad Company, you get the idea.

Dems older days

Games just seemed longer. Don't know if it is just me getting better or games getting shorter in general

I definitely played a lot more when I was younger.

But overall, I think things are better these days since I have much easier access to all the games from those days and the new stuff as well. It is a lot more casual in my approach- more of an in between other things I need to do. But its still just as fun as it was when I was younger- though a lot of the mystique and wonder has kind of gone out of it...

I think you have a point there TelHybrid, with the fact that 'hypage' tends to lead many people's decision buying habits. I've heard 'I got... because all my friends got it" used quite often, mostly in regard to online, but it still plays a major part in games as well, because we tend to buy games we know our mates are playing so we can play aginst them.

To me, a good ol game of Populous still beats many of the games I play today, still love to play Diablo 2 from time to time.

Caligulove, I agree, but I still feel like something is missing, back then, it was interesting to go to people's houses where they had games, because chances are they had a few bizzare games in their collection, some of which you had never heard of, you play some of it, and end up enjoying it. Though you can get those same games now, there isn't much incentive to playing them, especially when you have the options stacked against you, hmmm, old mgs or God of war 3, choices choices....

I think Fifa has gotten too serious as well, in its attempt to be the best football game and stay ahead of Pro Evo, the stuff that used to crack me up in a Fifa game and make it addictive is gone :(

I think the PS1/PS2 days were my prime, when online multiplayer was either a far-off dream or far from it's full potential. Back then games were more imaginative with a focus on single player or split screen. Yesterday I recieved DIRT 2 to find it doesn't even have split screen options, only online. When I was a kid every racing game had a split screen option! Those were the days

Back then there was no internet and games were much more of a surprise.

Yeah, thats what I mean by little humour to be gained. While there is the occasional joke or sarcasm or satire, I think the originality of 1 and 2 made them fun and humourous, especially 2. I remember playing MGS for the first time.....sigh, those were the days ^^

Saying that, I do wish they had added a multiplayer option to Populous before rereleasing it on PSN :( That game was fun, would be even more if I could play it over PSn, considering there were no multiplayer options of much to talk about back then, even the PC multiplayer version was unplayable to be honest.

I just hated the atmosphere of MGS4, mostly because Snake was old, and always seemed to be coughing. The protagonist in a stealth game should not need to to stop every once in a while to put his hand on his knee and cough.

You mean fun or funny? Imo MGS2 is as serious as 4, with some random jokes and funny details around the game.

There's a lot of crap released and I'm getting increasingly picky, but I can count on one hand old games from, say, back in the 90s, that I can enjoy today. Games have gotten better, in my opinion, in terms of visuals and immersion, and most importantly the actual gameplay is more fun and accessible and not only appealing to a niche.

The only things I can truly say were better 'back in the day' was the artistic design of games and also how there was much more focus on singleplayer over multiplayer.
