Gaming universes you would most certainly NOT want to be in.

We've had numerous threads about what gaming universe you would like to be in, but I haven't found a thread that asks you the opposite. What game universe do you think would be a never-ending nightmare for the occupants.

Fable and Fable 2 seem to have an odd sense of law and order and justice. Basically, if you commit a crime, you get fined. Commit a lot of crimes, and you get fined a lot, or, in the case of the sequel, get sent out to kill your fellow criminals.

Now is it me, or does this seem grotesquely unfair? You could have someone who'd made their fortune and who had millions walking down the street shooting anyone over the age of 18 for fun before paying off the guards and thanking them for the sport, but if you were one of the very poor and couldn't afford to pay the fine for, say, stealing a loaf of bread, your choice is to get hacked down by the guards, or go out and get hacked to death by monsters/bandits.

A world where the rich can hunt the poor for fun, where monsters roam the countryside and where traders have about as much chance of making it between towns as a packet of crisps on a long coach trip. That's a nightmarish world for you! Unless you have a very nice hero of course... but God help you all if your resident hero is a psychopath.

Any other nightmare gaming universes?

Haha, nice thread. As for me I'd hate to be in bioshock's rapture. Does that even need explaining?
Edit: Also Stillwater from Saint's Row. Four rival gangs in one city who often have open warfare (not to mention the fact that 'the player' has a nasty habit of driving down the sidewalk)? Cops who seem to have given up and gone home for most of the game? No thanks.

Fallout 3 Wasteland...with all the mutants and bloody deathclaws...no clean drinking water...and the odd desire to throw yourself off the top of Rivet City (or is that just me)

Any of the early Call of Duty games.

*Wakes up in a boat*
"Woah where the hell am I?"
"Uh just off the French coast, it's June sixth.
"Shit."

The W40k universe.

"In the grim darkness of the far future there is only way."

A game 'verse with that kind of tagline is generally one I wouldn't want to be caught in, especially seeing how even bio-engineered super soldiers get their asses handed to them by all kinds of nasty critters and heretics.

Silent Hill. I would probably go piss myself, go cry in a corner and go insane, before I'd be able to get out of there.

WH40k.

Where being tortured and dismembered is one of the better ways to die.
Or, you could just get killed on the battlefield. With a bullet.

Starcraft universe, where being infested and mind controlled by buggy bloodthirsty aliens is just around the corner for a human being

Anyone Silent Hill? fuck that.
Actually, in reference to Silent Hill by itself, all you'd have to do is stay out of Silent Hill... but if the whole universe was like that... yeah, I think I'd second this. Resident evil wouldn't be much fun either... though people would probably learn how to effectively quarantine infections and prevent major zombie outbreaks.

Mass effect as well. Imagine if the Reapers did exist?

Fallout universe.
My very first encounter with the capital wasteland:
"Wow, what an amazing endless world that lies ahead waiting for me to explore this could well be..."
*hears growling, turns to look*
"Oh my god there's a giant mole rat creature flee!!!!"
*Runs*
"AHHH GIANT ANTS!!!"
*Runs further after being bitten*
"Thank god.... I'm sa-"
*GUNSHOT*
"AHHHHHHH PEOPLE SHOOTING AT ME, MY LEG'S DISABLED!!"
*Desperatley fleeing, finds water*
"Oh thank god I can heal at long last... OH MY GOD CRAB MONSTER!!!!"
*Drags wounded self away in desperation*
"Must...Heal...Self... Dying."
*Sees pond*
"Oh thank god, water... thank you!"
*drinks water oblivious to the crackling of his pip boy*
"What does this 'Rad/sec meter thing mean... rad as in radiation?"
*Vomits violently*
"OH GOD FIFTY RADIATION POINTS PER SECOND!!!"
*gurgles and collapses, hears the scuttling of giant cockroaches*
"Oh god.... let it ennnnnnnnnnd."
*Cockroached devour supple body.*

Total time survived, eight minutes and fourteen seconds.

..... no thanks.
