Gaming with my wife

BACKGROUND:
My wife isn't what most would call a hardcore gamer. She's into iPhone games and has fond memories of Super Mario Brothers. When the new Mario for Wii came out, we got it, had a great time, beat it, and since haven't really had any games to play together. I've suggested some of the Lego games, as the gameplay is somewhat similar to your standard Mario platforming/action, and this met with a rousing, "Eh, maybe." I've also mentioned getting Rock Band, or any of the sequels, but while she enjoys playing this at parties, she's said flat out that she has no real interest in playing it at home.

That's not to say she isn't interested in games at all. She's sat and watched me play Fallout: New Vegas and Mass Effect 1 & 2 for hours at a stretch, asking questions about the characters and the plot much as one might as when coming into a movie half-way through. This may have more to do with her interest in me, rather like asking, "Oooh, what's that you're reading?" But affirming that would make this endeavor a non-starter and as such I am, for the moment, going to ignore that possibility.

Personally, I think it's that she's just never had much truck with the controllers. She stopped playing console games back when it was still a handful of buttons and a D-pad. We tried a coop game of L4D a while ago and she wound up doing that spinning in circles and looking alternately at the floor or the ceiling thing.

TO THE POINT:
The question I have is this: are there any games that people recommend that would be a good introduction to the whole dual-analog stick and shoulder button set-up?

I know that I may ultimately have to accept that while she may be totally into me, my wife just isn't interested in putting the time and effort into developing the skills necessary to operate the current generation of console controllers. But before I resign myself to that, I want to take one more shot at sharing this aspect of my life with her.

Suggestions?

I want to be clear that I intend no sweeping generalizations about gender and gaming and to point out that is I held such views I would not even attempt what I am proposing herein. These comments to apply exclusively to my wife. Please do not reply with, "YUR WIFES A GIRL THAT'S YUR PROBLEM LOLZ!!!11" as that's really not helping anyone. To everyone else, thanks in advance for any suggestions you may have.

Hmm... Ghostbusters is a simple, fun game that uses all the controller buttons. Playing on normal gives a lot of wiggle room for starters as well.

And it's GHOSTBUSTERS. Who can say no?

Alternatively, just get her hooked on Wii Fit.

You might try her on PC with mouse/keyboard instead of console. In my experience, mouse/keyboard is usually easier for beginners than console controls.

For people who are accustomed to console controllers, they don't usually understand how difficult it is to learn. I do the exact same thing as your wife when using console controllers - it just doesn't work. (I actually suspect that I'd instantly be about 10x better, which is to say still sucky but able to at least move forward, if I could change the controls to swap the analogue sticks.)

Also, keep in mind that there's two issues here; one is the FPS POV, and one is the controls. She isn't used to either, and she's better off learning them one at a time.

Try the halo series.

Seriously that game is easy to pick up and play.

I got a bunch of cute girls into gaming through halo.

All you gotta do is play co op and let her get some kills here and there.

To get used to controllers, I suggest finding her a game where the camera is dynamic, but largely independent. Kingdom Hearts, or a 3D Zelda game, or any other well-designed action games like that. Its not too hard to get used to moving a character with a stick, but controlling a camera while moving a character in a separate manner takes a type of multitasking that isn't found much in any other activity. Once she's comfortable with an action RPG camera style, you could bridge the gap to FPSs with 3rd person games.

And thank you.

Katamari. It's really simple.
This. Katamari is intuitive, entertaining, and a real riot.

I also say halo is a no-no. It can be very tough for people who have never played a console shooter. This is coming from someone who played Half-Life and Counterstrike on the PC and tried to play halo 1 on easy difficulty. I crashed and burned. Of course, now I can play Gears of War without batting an eye, but that's another story entirely.

Given the games you mentioned, I'm going to assume that you have a Wii and a 360. One game that I've been getting a real kick out of is Split/Second. It's like Forza or PGR on the set of an action flick. You've got tanker trucks exploding as you drive by, bridges collapsing as you're about to drive over them, all sorts of crazy stuff like that. The controls are really simple, too. triggers for forward and reverse, left analog for steering, and A and B for "power plays." (the things that trigger the above explosions) Even my dad, who was a champ at Galaga and Pac-Man back in the day can pick this game up and go with it. He hasn't played many other games since my formative years, so this is big for me.
