First off I want to say I have very limited experience with Garry's mod, I've played around with it some but I am by no means an expert with it.

Today I was handed a sheet detailing my last history project for the first semester. We are to create a video retelling of a historical event or time period, the term video not defined which means I can use Garrys Mod in order to do this.

The video needs to be at a minimum five minutes, however seven is more realistic, and the project is due January 18th. My question is will I have enough time to build, record, and edit the film if I start this weekend?

I plan to record the footage with fraps, and I don't really have a good video editor, I do have the default windows movie maker though.

EDIT: I plan to show the causes of the American Revolution. Such as the Stamp Act, The Boston Massacre, Thomas Payne's "Common Sense", and then eventually the signing of the Declaration of Independence.

I can use NPC's of any kind for the video cause some groups are using freaking sock puppets with marker faces! If they can do that I can have a Gorden Freeman George Washington!

Depends what our going to do it about. You could recreate the civil war by making white combines shoot CP elites ?

Thats an example.

Do you have the full version of Fraps, or just the trial?
The full version, my Brother does a ton of lets plays.
Do you know how to compress the size of the movies, so that they don't lag?
Windows Movie Maker has a compression option, I think I'll limit it to about twenty frames per second as well. I plan to shoot everything in parts and then combine them towards the end to make it one video file.

I didn't know that. When I checked Fraps' homepage it told me about a bunch of other programs I should use. That didn't work so well, so I hope WMM works better at that.

As a suggestion for your movie would be to download Dans NPc pack and recreate a battle during WWII featuring the Germans and the Soviets. Just a thought.

I tried to make a Gmod movie as a school project once. It failed horribly.

Garrys Mod can be effective for making dramatic and thematic scenes.
However the best stuff is not made with Garry's Mod. It's made with SourceSDK and Filmmaker using demosmoothing, and takes many months to make properly.

Wow thanks for that, seriously that videos better than most professional short films that I've seen. I seriously doubt I could do that in a months time though.

The guys who did that also did Maintenance Man and War of the Servers. They're very talented. As for help with this, I remember I camera mod I used to have which allowed you to set almost sort of invisible floating rails with a camera on it with timings and so forth. See if you can find that, it will make your film much nicer.

EDIT: Found it. [http://www.garrysmod.org/downloads/?a=view&id=109201]

I just got Dans NPC pack from the site, a lot of great additions were just added to my library. As for FRAPs, it definitely works great, especially since you can start and stop recording without exiting the actual game. Some people were complaining about there being lag with the sound and video, but so far I haven't gotten that. The only problem is that when I record it, like a thirty second clip is nearly 2 gb. This means that I'm gonna have to compress the hell out of it, I'm still not sure how I'm gonna complete that task.

Thanks for that, I was looking for something to do my establishing shots with and that will help tremendously. One more question, do you have any idea how to remove your health, weapon, and ammo indicator on the screen so that FRAPS won't record them when I want my actual view to act as a camera?

For some reason your response disappeared. But to get rid of the HUD just equip the camera.

Yeah the Escapist is acting up again. And I herp derp myself, I know it would be something simple like that. I was thinking I'd have to screw around with the console. Thanks again.

No problem, oh and when you're done, put up the finished product for us to see. Should be interesting.

If I don't fail miserably I will.

There is a console command for it, I think it's called "cl_drawhud 0".
