My dad (who is 58) has never played games before, but he bought a blu-ray player that streams Netflix so poorly that I convinced him to get a PS3 instead. To my shock and awe he is even considering buying some games. He likes sci-fi and action movies, loves to read, loves gadgets and tech stuff, but has NEVER played ANY video games. I'm looking for a "gateway" game that will give him a good introduction. Any suggestions?

I'd be tempted to suggest Heavy Rain as the story is great, and it's not really that hard to play on the easier settings. Or maybe even LA Noire.

Or perhaps Portal and Portal 2

There's always the option of Sports or Racing games if he's into those things anyway.

Sci-Fi and Action movies?
...Mass Effect, maybe? Well, number 2 at least.

Alfador is right with what he said, too.
End of the day, modern games are extremely accessible, especially on the easier difficulties.

Just don't get Demon's Souls;D

Alfador_VII:
Heavy Rain is a great suggestion, and it's a game I had forgotten about. He'd probably like Portal's sense of humor as well. I'd be the least certain about L.A. Noire.
This would be a lot easier if he were a sports guy, but unfortunately he is not. But maybe he'd find the genre more exciting as a game to play instead of a game to watch. Thanks for your suggestions!

BlueberryMUNCH:
Mass Effect sounds good too. I've never played it. Is it anything like Star Trek? Star Trek is his absolute favorite thing of all time.
I thought about just letting him pick up whatever looked interesting, but if he picked Demon Souls I would have to intervene ;) Thanks for your suggestions!
