I hear this phrase get thrown around a lot in our little culture but what does this or it's opposite phrase "you no lifer!" mean to you?

I think it means you don't "socialize" enough, by which I mean "you don't get drunk and do stupid shit" enough. Is it really that bad not to have a social life?

I don't have a social life, if I am not doing my few hours of voluntary work then I am sat alone in my flat gaming, youtube-ing, job searching or forum-ing.

So what are your thoughts on what is it to have a life, is it bad not to have a social life and what ever else.

Hey, I have a life! It's sitting right here on my desk! *holds up his 1-up plushie*

...But seriously, my grandma is ALWAYS giving me that. I'm over at her house, playing something on my laptop, and she keeps saying that I am not living and that I am going to look back and be sad that I didn't have a life when I was young.

And then I tell her that I DO have a life. I have a wonderful girlfriend, a bunch of super close friends to hang out with (and with whom I'm making a game with), and I like to go on hikes when I have the chance. And then she ignores that and tells me that I should grow out of games and that I have no life, etc.

And sometimes she goes on side notes about how she would finish work at 8 PM, then go out dancing until 4 AM and then be ready to go to work two days later and that was how you "lived"...Which disregards the fact that I don't like to dance very much.

I mean, I love my grandma a whole whole lot, but she really doesn't get my generation. ...Then again, I wouldn't expect her to. :p

So yeah, I have a life. Gaming is a huge part of it, but it's not ALL I do. It's just that I really enjoy it, and so do all my friends and GF so we end up playing a lot when we're together too.

I usually just stop taking someone seriously when they use that term, to be honest. As far as I'm concerned, if you're living, breathing and generally enjoying yourself however you see fit, then you have a life. And it is pretty fucking stupid for other people to claim otherwise.

The only time I could imagine such a term being remotely accurate, would be to describe Josef Fritzl's daughter during her imprisonment or someone who has a life sentence behind bars et cetera, but to say someone has no life because they don't go outside? Or because they'd rather play a video game rather than talk to people is just downright idiotic.

I don't think it's a good thing in your case. In my humble opinion there is a big difference between your example and the following;

Forums are fun and all (I'm here too, right?), but they aren't a suitable substitute for social interactions in the flesh. As a supplement, good stuff. I wouldn't hate on someone just for their "lack of life", rather express concern for those who's sole existence is basically an online avatar.

To me this the perfect middle ground, I don't like to be around people 'cos after awhile it always turns into "she said this about me and I don't like him 'cos of this tiny reason". People also have an annoying habit of talking over each other, which I just can't do so I get interrupted a lot, which obviously can't happen on here.

People tend to want to hang out in bars or have sit at home and drink booze while talking or gaming or whatever and I totally shut down when people have alcohol around me. You see it on TV shows all the time, just sat round talking "hey, do you wanna beer?" etc and even the smell of it turns my stomach now.

To me having a life always meant going to parties, having lots of sex, getting drunk with your friends, having a job, earning money, going on various trips (ski, rock-climbing, white-water rafting) and shit like that.

Anything that didn't have anything to do with reading books, watching movies, playing video games, reading comics, drawing comics, painting pictures, writing stories, playing an instrument and so forth.

I don't have too much of a life right now, but thats because I'm in a temporary living situation in the arse-end of nowhere, so all I can do is mooch on forums and play WoW because thats pretty much all my senile laptop can manage.

I wish people didn't associate having a life with wanting to get pissed all the time, but thats more a personal gripe of mine. I'm 21 and people expect someone my age to be down nightclubs all the time.
My mother insists that when I am older I will regret not going out to get pissed all the time, but I doubt it.

Shit like this pisses me off.
Lately I had a chance to talk neutrally with the kind of partying dipshit I would usually ignore. We were both on an exchange and we were stuck with each other for a few hours, so we pretty much had to talk lest we both be bored as fuck. She was shocked when I said I only went out about once every other month, and asked why I don't go to parties.
''I don't see the point.''
''It's fun!''
''I have fun at home.''
''But this is more fun!''
''People experience fun differently.''
''Yeah, but everyone knows parties are the most fun thing!''
It was like talking to a brick wall, she didn't seem to understand some people don't like the same immature shit she does. Then she had the nerve of calling me childish when I told her I played games.
When people say get a life, I feel like yelling in their face; ''I DO HAVE A LIFE, JUST BECAUSE I DON'T GO OUT AND RAPE MY LIVER DOESN'T MEAN I AM SOCIALLY INEPT.''
But I don't.
*Sigh...*

Having no "life" is only as bad as you make it out to be.

Example my brother view me having no life is a bad think (which to him I'm living out as a hermit).

On my view on it I somewhat agree but so what, having a "life" has different meaning these days (society is always changing). It is my life and I am capable of decided/ handling what is the best for me (I only got myself to blame). Sure I may not have much of a life compare to my brother standard but at least I know what's more valuble in life.

Sure I have fewer friends but the friends I have now mean alot to me. At least I'm safe inside my home at night and not getting pissed damaging my liver or possible getting mugged. Also my ears are intact now risking myself getting deaf from the loud music in a bar. I know for one thing is that my situation is nowhere near bad as it could be.

I've yet to heat this phrase directed to me because, for the most part, I have been able to balance my social life and interest in video games pretty well. To those who have been deemed "those which have no life," I say to ignore those unlicensed branders.

Do what you enjoy in life and avoid anything that will only stir up negativity and hate. We all have one life to life and it's best spent doing what we love. So if others can't accept how you choose to live your life, tell'em to eff off.

May I say that you all sound like healthy, level-headed people.
I've always had to deal with this, but I just don't let it bother me anymore.
Follow your bliss, and fuck the haters.

That you are overly focused on a single thing, especially if it is a very specific interest that serves no real practical application, yet can cost you a lot of time and energy.
Say, bitching about the ending of a videogame on forums for the better part of a week..

Usually it means "Don't do intellectually stimulating things that you enjoy - watch Jersey Shore and American Idol, or getting needlessly drunk for no real reason instead."

In my extensive research I have found that 'get a life' means one thing and one thing only.

'You don't do exactly the same things that I do with the same people and enjoyed to the same degree, so I feel that because you are different obviously you are not as awesome as I am. I don't just want you to get 'A' life, I want you to emulate 'MY' life, thus validating my own lifestyle choices which I am not entirely certain over. In fact I think I may have made some mistakes, but to admit this would be to admit that I am not perfect and I am too much of an egotist to realise this.'

I understand this is a lengthy translation, but sadly it is like many other foreign words. It doesn't translate well from douchebag into regular English.

As long as your doing something positive or productive, you've got a life. That's my take on it.

If there's anything you're really good at, whether it's gaming or playing a musical instrument or tennis, someone out there is going to say about you, "gee, he must have no life."

Just take it as a compliment.
