Apparently it's being taken off Steam on Monday morning because the rights are expiring on the music used.

It's only three bucks! Grab it before it's gone, like Mickey's Castle of Illusion

Hm, already have it and beat it... Its one of those games I am surprised I beat. I was weirdly way into the plot. (Plus the game was buggy for me, but I think it was cause my computer at the time could not handle it, beat it anyways)

I wish stuff like this was more obvious. Im sure there are a bunch of games I -would- have bought eventually, but got taken down before I even knew they were ever put up.

Anyways, a reminder of why digital distribution is not perfect.

Edit: Though atleast you dont lose them if you got them. Now THAT would be really bad. *hugs Duke Nukem Megaton Edition*

Wait, what? Alan wake is going away? That's fucking ridiculous. I don't condone going all Blackbeard, but if they insist on such stupid rules to adhere to, people are going to lose access to a rather pleasant experience. Physical copies are a necessity with this shit.

I played all Alan Wakes and I think the
the Alter Ego of Alan
is one of the Best psycho antagonist I ever encounter.
SO good that sometimes I can see becoming a villain for a
Persona game
A fan-fic Cross-over would be splendid. Or at least an Artwork!

Anyway....sad to hear that. I hope they at least do something with the music and release them as enchanted versions of something in the future.

Hey, just to add to this, I'd suggest running over to Gog.com. I just got Alan Wake [https://www.gog.com/game/alan_wake] and An American Nightmare [https://www.gog.com/game/alan_wakes_american_nightmare] for literally 4 dollars.

This way, you always own a copy.

As Ezekiel pointed out, physical discs do have a certain limitation.
That said however, it should in no way counteract the despicable acts of current digital distributions models.

Haven't bought each and every AAA game (or even AA game..) yet?
Might want to play it or test it in the future?
Better hurry up before they remove it entirely or start patching out stuff that have "expiring" "licenses" in it.

Steam (or equivalent), not even once!
Got GOG? Good!!

physical distribution isnt perfect either, data on a cd or dvd generally has a life span of around 25-30 years before its unreadable let alone actually finding the hardware that could read the media in the first place could be an issue.. not many 5 1/4 inch floppy disk drives around these days for instance

Going digital only is so much fun!

Good looking out there.
At least the digital version was in circulation for... five years? When did they stop producing the discs? After a year? Most physical releases are too limited. It's not like with the movie or music industries, where they keep printing them for decades. Digital sales are better for gaming. Especially the DRM-free ones, like GOG.
Games should not be taken down, period.

I still have my 360 version, as well as the DLCs and American Nightmare, so I'm safe on that front. But that being said, I highly recommend this game to anyone who has ever even been curious about it--especially for the price it's going for now. A shame we're probably never getting a real sequel, but what we got was great.

Wouldn't it be possible to remove the "expired" music and put out a new version of the game without it?

Apparently they can't figure out how to make that work, at least one article I saw mentioned so.

I still don't quite understand how music and the work it's in aren't tied to each other, where the music can only be licensed for a specific time instead of "as long as the game itself".

Apparently TV shows can fall under this too, especially anything that started on MTV.
