Afternoon escapees, I've just started the second part of my computer science degree and have begun applying for jobs in the game industry.

However, my chosen field (level scripting/design) tend to have a preference for people with showreels/portfolios.

I was just wondering if anyone had a few ideas on games (free or cheap) with mod kits that may be suitable for getting a showreal made.

Thanks in advance.

If you're going for level design, maybe try making L4D campaigns. Source's development kit is pretty easy to learn and work with, although not as much so as UDK, but it's a good start.

You have the Source engine (Half Life 2, Counter Strike, L4D, etc), Unreal Engine 3 (UDK) and the CryEngine 2 (Crysis).

A great site to learn about the UDK.

This guy has good tutorial for the Cry Engine 2

And for the Source engine you can try 3D Buzz again and see if there is anything there about it, I dont know where are good tuts about it.

A lot of people consider the Unreal Engine to be easier to learn than the Source Engine. Valve (owners of the Source Engine) did say they were working on making more user friendly tools, but we don't know how long it will take.

Thanks guys, i don't have Left 4 Dead, so i'll probably end up making TF2 maps.

On that note, do i need a Unreal engine game to test or even make unreal engine maps?
