So I saw this on Youtube right now-

Right now I got a low expectation of it and not really have any opinion from the 1st trailer alone. The only thing I will typed is that they got Batou cybernetic eyes in but it kinda look like scifi button stuck to his eyelids. I was expecting goggle pieces stuck onto his eyelids instead.

Also can we please keep this civil and NOT resorting to about if the Major is really asian or not like the past GiTS thread?

Ugh...I was a big proponent of the wait and see approach for this movie but this trailer killed a lot of excitement for me. It feels like they are trying to hard to ape Blade Runner, when GITS is almost nothing like it. While the aesthetics are solid they just seem like a hyper exaggeration of the movie, which is neat, but I found the manga and tv series to be way more interesting. A lot of the technology were presented to be rather mundane for the most part which I loved. It helped sell the world since all the characters were experts in this stuff and weren't impressed by most of it. Its annoying that they latched onto the naked invis suit for the Major, I always found it to be the weakest of the Major's designs and it doesn't translate well to real life. Scarlet's performance seems lackluster but that appears to be more a fault of the director than her currently.

Story seems bad too. It looks like they are centering the story around the Major's backstory, which is bizarre because one of the main points in the series is that we never really get a clear picture of her past. The Major and the rest of Section 9 are more of a vehicle to experience the world rather than having character arcs be the main driving force of the story. I'll wait for reviews for my final decision but now I am not remotely excited for this.

Uh Ghost in the Shell has always been a wholesale rip-off of Blade Runner.

Doesn't look amazing, but I'll probably go see it on a cheap night or something just because movies of this nature are still fairly rare (I know people complain about the glut of superhero films and such, but they're really a small percentage of all available terrible films).

It looks like it might be a fun sci-fi action flick, but nothing more than that. And that's OK for me because I've never been a fan of Ghost in the Shell or anime in general. I also don't understand people who want this to be the literal live action version of the animated film. That's what the animated film is for. It won't cease to exist because of this adaptation. Adapting a book and fucking it up is one thing, but adapting an animated film into a live action film is entirely different. Both are movies. Why make the same thing twice?

It looks like it'll have some merrit on the visual side of things. And yet it feels a bit hollow. I had the same issue with Snow White and the Huntsman; The visuals should be hooking me more than they are.

Batou's eyes look like shit. The cybernetic skin suit is a good compromise for having her naked.

It also seems like it'll be a combination of GitS 1 and 2, or should I say, the shot-for-shot recreations feel like it'll be a mixture of that. And are they going to have the Major lezzing out with another android? Never thought they'd carry that over from the manga.

Oh for fucks sake. Stop giving Scarlet Johnanson words to say! Its not worth it! Tell her to look pouty, show off her ass and wear tight clothing. She's certainly not here to act or speak, and she's terrible at both. Watching her attempt to act is like watching a dead goose trying to solve Grimm's Conjecture while juggling a hundred thousand ripe tomatoes. While covered in meringue. And also an atomic bomb just exploded 2 feet away.

It ain't happenin'

No. It was Oshii who went all emotionless and visually meditative with it. I prefer the spunkier Major. I never really thought the franchise was that special, though. Alita should have had the success Ghost in the Shell had.

Part of me thinks Oshii did that so that he wouldn't have to animate the characters. For much of the dialogue, they lack expression and don't look at each other or move at all. From 37:46 to 38:32, Batou, Kusanagi and Togusa are all in profile view, with the only things moving being their mouths. Almost a minute of no animation.
Even than both Anime Series and Movie is one of the better animated anime than other animation I can think of.

(Looks at Family Guy)

Uh.. no it isn't. The movie sure but the source material is a different beast entirely from Blade Runner. Don't get smug about something just because your favorite obnoxious youtuber finds one similar scene.

It looks like that's exactly what they're going for though. There's atleast 5 shot-for-shot remade scenes in the trailer.

One can have an international story set in a specific country ;)

Visuals looks pretty damn good I could say, I really like the aesthetics of it all.

As for the rest... It's okay-ish I guess? Not excited about it, but not on my "never watch" list anymore either, so that's something.

Found this-

Are they basically redoing the first animated in lived action form since the trailer did show that water fight?

nah, if you create the same story with the same aesthetics, but mysteriously change the main character to a white woman to sell it to american audiences, you no longer get to use excuses
undeadsuitor's right, it's in the rules and by-laws of the internet.

OT: This looks like it wants to be BladeRunner so bad. And Johansson's line delivery reminds me of Samus from Other M: very monotonous and unengaging to the point of irritation. Feels really weird to have a story be about the Major's past when it's kinda a non-issue with the other series. I really hope they don't do that thing in movies where whatever was done to her as a child somehow ties into the main plot/mystery of the movie, that doesn't seem very inventive or interesting to me. Can we just have a movie with a fully realized main character who doesn't need to spend 90 minutes to 2 hours trying to figure out who they really are only to realize that their actions and ideals define who they are and not their past? Can we do THAT kind of movie instead? Another thing that bothers me is that Major is a special little snowflake being "the first of her kind" and "not having any connections to her world."
