I'm an American and a gun enthusiast, and I partially agree with this statement. What training was this shithead gun owner given before being allowed to purchase the weapon? Tennessee's gun laws do not require any form of training, or a permit, before purchasing a handgun- only a background check. While I'm fairly freedom-oriented when it comes to firearm ownership, this does not at all sit well with me.

Were it up to me, every prospective gun owner, before being given their first weapon, would undergo education and testing to ensure that they know how to handle a firearm responsibly. And for shock value, that person would have to watch a training video showing an autopsy photograph of a child who died like this young girl did. If that doesn't drive home the absolute importance of firearm safety, whether or not the person has a child themselves, then I quite honestly wouldn't trust the person to own one.

I don't believe in the whole "it takes a village to raise a child" line, but this sort of thing MUST be prevented at the base level. With power comes responsibility, and with the power to freely own a firearm comes the responsibility to treat that firearm like the always-potentially-deadly object that it is. Treat a loaded handgun that is not in your hand like it is an angry beast that wants to kill everyone you care about and is just waiting for that moment you turn your back to do so.

Perhaps, but I really don't believe stupid people should be allowed to breed. You need a license to have a dog, you need to be trained and licensed to operate a car, the same should go for a child.

No one should be allowed to breed unless they can pass a basic IQ test, a medical test showing that they will not pass on any major birth defects to the child as well as a 6 month course on child rearing and parental responsibility. You can't meet all three of those? We have a pill to make it go away.

America has already done Eugenics [http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2004/04/29/60minutes/main614728.shtml] from eugenics to mass genocide (NAZIs) the human race has already done these horrible things. Now we have moved onto human genetic engineering. We will have the technology to solve most of our problems, except for the problems caused by our technology.

Maybe I have good eyes but I could tell which was which. Although the blame is still on the father. Hell this makes it seem even stupider. He didn't even follow basic gun safety. You never and I mean never leave a loaded firearm where small children can reach it! I hope the guilt drives him to madness!

Not to mention that video-games are in NO WAY involved (seeing as it was the step-father who left a loaded gun on the nightstand.
you know that theyll still blame videogames for this

Please, tell me the steps.

How is that the fault of "America"? "America" didn't leave the gun sitting on the living room counter. The stupid parents did.

Also, why wasn't the safety on?
It is a common misconception but not many handguns actually have safeties. The line of reasoning being that if someone who shouldn't have access to the weapon has access, than a tiny switch would be no greater a deterrent to use than the trigger itself.
That little switch can make a shit ton of difference especially if a kid gets a hold of it.

I can imagine somebody is going to be up in fits about these three idiots and is going to try taking away my guns again. The parents should have educated the child about firearms. Three years is old enough to learn about death and various ways to avoid it.

Also, don't most guns have to be... like have the hammer or slide pulled back before firing?

I have no idea who's more stupid. The dad who leaves a discharged weapon on the table, or the girl who didn't notice different shape, color, weight and still managed to pull the obviously tougher trigger. And managed to somehow shoot herself.

That does make a bit more sense. At first I was skeptical at how even a small child could mistake the real gun from the fake. Seeing this though it clarifies the sad tragedy. My family had firearms in the house growing up but my brother and myself were taught from a very young age that guns were not toys. And they were never within our grasp. NEVER. Such a sad case of neglect.

Great link, interesting read.

The problem is we still allow stupid people to have both children and handguns. Doesn't seem like humanity's great step forward to me.

Besides, there is a huge difference between some poor kid swept up in a system that wanted him forgotten... and sterilizing some hick family from Tennessee for careless handling of a firearm and negligence leading to the murder of their child.

Some people should simply not be allowed to have children, for the good of society and for the good of the child.

Edit: Also, I am sorry but I must claim Godwin's. ^_~

Lets forget about the girl and persecute the father. At least put the gun away, OR turn the safety on, OR take out the ammo.

I have a theory! She was playing with it and did it by accident. She was also playing with it, and she thought it was a toy.

Not really, the safety on most rifles are as easy to click to on as it is to work a twisty top pen. It is important to understand, that guns are intended to be handled by people who know how to use a gun safely, like for instance, people who know enough not to point it at themselves.

The best way to keep a child from hurting themselves is to not leave loaded, ready to fire guns around to begin with, regardless of the presence of a safety, and to monitor and educate children as to what to do with guns. Keeping a realistic looking toy around for the purposes of gaming may be funny and cool for a teenager, but it is not a good educational object to have with children who are then programed to lack respect for dangerous items in the future.

Isn't there a pretty hefty weight difference between a loaded gun and a hunk of plastic?

why did she shoot herself and not the tv?

Geez... Anyone investing in that kind of WiiMote add-ons should be questioned.

If the article didn't tell me which gun was real, I would've said it was the lower one.
The barrel on that lower gun is MASSIVE.

Good lord what do you think it fires? Slugs?

As for the OP, this is pretty effed. Negligence is far too common in families these days (Being the last 15 or so years) :(.

Real guns are disturbingly heavy. When I was younger I did something similar to this little girl at a friends house. Considering the difficulty I had lifting it (I was fairly young) I immediately knew something was up.

Plastic tends to not fight you when you try to lift something made entirely of it.

But don't you know? Everyone who owns a gun is an irresponsible idiot, and therefore, it is all right to judge all Americans by stories like this.

Despite it's looks, I'm pretty sure even a 3 year old can tell the difference between a 2oz light gun and a 2-pound pistol. And that's not factoring the 8-pound-average trigger pull.

Just saying.
