I am currently playing the Baldu's gate saga and I remembered that I never played Icewind dale. Now I know they are more combat orientated and I wonder why I should play Icewind Dale 1 and not 2 since the latter has even D&D 3E rules.
Why not play the first one and then the second? Because I know myself and I ll never have all the patience to play 2 parties.

So, is there a reason to play the first one over the second?

I think the second game is better it has far more races and classes and I never liked the THA0 system. (sorcerors FTW)

They're both excellent. Not as memorable as Baldur's Gate, but in many ways the combat is more entertaining since they more or less throw story out the window at times in favor of "Ok, what would be an *awesome* fight?" but that's a great thing so long as you just don't think into it too much. And since you make your own groups, you can play with your own perfect group.

Icewind Dale 2 is also extremely good looking seeing as it was the very last game made on the Infinity Engine and Black Isle by that point had years of experience behind them.

As for Icewind Dale 1... hmm... Oh, I know, there's this mod that only recently came out (Yeah, people are still modding the Infinity Engine, it's amazing!) that's supposed to give the original game a more Baldur's Gate feel with recruitable npc's with their own dialogue and the like as well as a more interactive plot. Haven't tried it myself, but it's by the Pocket Plane folks who rock so it's likely amazing.

Personally though I just say play both in whatever order you like, there really isn't much of a connecting plot. Couple repeating locations and a few references is all, the two stand pretty well on their own.
