I just got a ps3, and now I have the God of War 1-2 hd used bargain bin re-release. I'm sure people have complained about the Greek mythology being changed (raped/thrown out the window) ta make more boobs shown and monsters be present (for no real reason) for you to button mash through just cause they look cool... and I know the original game is an old ps2 game (that sold like crazy).... but seriously, are these still great games? The camera fights against you, they don't try to give any plot when ya start, and it has more invisible walls than Fable and ffxiii combined. I know I sound like a hater and probably should just stick w/ the game and I'll eventually find the awe-inspiring greatness that it is.... But after a few hours of the first game I'm really not impressed. I liked Darksiders and Bayonetta enough to play through them and start again, and didn't have these complaints. Then I heard those 2 were 'like god of war but..' and figured I'd love God of War. Maybe I just don't get the ps3 controller yet, maybe I am used ta newer games (I got a ps3 for heavy rain), I'm sure most of you are playing God of War III right now and think I'm an ass for complaining about the old games, but should I try ta stick w/ them and finish both before I get the new one? Or should I just get God of War III tomorrow and skip the first 2?

Yeah I sound like I'm bitching, cause I'm a ***** like that sometimes : P

Lotsa games make you play a few hours before they start ta get good/better...... they are older games.... should I keep at it tho is what I'm askin. Will it pay off in the long run since I kinda don't like the camera/controls/plot after the first few hours is what I'm askin.

The plot itself will get better once you get to, in fact its one of the best plots I have ever seen in a game. The gameplay/combat will get a lot more intense and difficult but also rewarding

The 3rd GoW seems to make reference to God of War 1 and 2 and even Chains of Olympus a lot...but it depends. Who really gives that much of a fuck that they changed Greek mythology around, ancient Greeks? They're dead. The reason I like it is that the controls feel smooth, the visuals are great (well, when you FIRST played them before PS3 they were stunning) and the story is one that you need to play to learn, it's not a "beginning cutscene tells all" kinda thing. The camera can fight you, but never that much to be a deal breaker unless you're a 13 year old spazoid who can't sit still to even read any of these replies

I would stay stick with it and beat the games, if only to justify buying it, and let yourself make up your mind as to whether you want 3 or not. I was surprisingly upset at the opening to God of War 3 until I saw my first Leviathan, and then it started getting good.

Wait a sec, since when does Darksiders and Bayonetta not suffer from those same problems you brought up playing with GoW?

Invisible walls and shifty camera angles are issues all hack&slash games deal with.

And, wait another sec...lol

Are you suggesting Bayonetta's story/plot made any lick of sense...0o

When I first got GoW I played through for about 2 hours, got bored and didn't touch it for about 6 months. For some reason when I popped the disc again, the game really grabbed me the second time. Give it a go and just stick through a little bit.

of all the hack&slash games (DMC 1,2,3,4,NG 1,2, DARKSIDERS and bayonetta) god of war has the best story.

Haven't played GoW but if I'm not mistaken the reason they don't give you any plot when you start is because they want to serve you the plot as you play the game. Finding out why you're in the predicament in the beginning of the game is (or at least, should be) the reason why you keep on playing.

The plot is the carrot.

Pretty much this. Think of it as "Come for the awesome hack-'n-slash, stay for Kratos' story", and you'll get the gist of it.

I can't remember any camera issues or invisible walls though, care to give some examples? I do remember that enemies could jump onto you from out of screen, but they always gave you time to react so that you could parry/dodge any attack that get thrown at you.
And the invisible walls had reasons to be there (you don't want to fall down this cliff, do you?) or a visual cue that showed that you couldn't go there, such as a pile of boxes or whatever.

Oh, and while I've yet to play the third, I feel somewhat confident in saying that the story from the two previous games will only serve to highten your enjoyment of the game, and that lack of knowledge about what has already happen could make it confusing to keep up.

Bayonetta and Darksiders let you move the camera around, GOW has fixed cameras like the old resident evil games a bit.... I don't like the whole running into the unknown while camera looks at you instead of were your going I guess. Plus when I fight I like to see what I'm fighting. I assume all the GOW games have this camera type?

As for the plot, all I know is that ya goto next room kill repeat again a bunch of times and fight a boss for no better reason then it's fightin you. 2 hours in and I don't know why I'm killing the stuff. Bayonetta gave cut scenes w/ plot (yeah, I know it was crazy and made little sense at first but then it is explained plainly by the end) before you even started the game and more after every turn almost. Darksiders yeah... that first lvl did suck, but it got better quicker me thinks.

I guess the invisible wall thing just seems worse cause there hasn't been any open levels to explore that much, so far. Bein as GOW 1 is old I should forgive it that. But as long as it kicks in eventually, and people seem to have high regards for the story, I plan to keep at it. It is funny how a lot of games take awhile to kick in.

Thank you everyone for the responses!
