Hello to the kind and helpful Escapists,

I thought I would set up this thread for anyone having trouble with the System Shock 2 game from GoG.com. Like alot of people, I was so pleased when it was available (finally!) and eagerly downloaded it. As is the rule with the internet, it is never true that you are "the only one" - so in that spirit, here is my problem:

When I try to run the setup.exe file, it starts up, but loads improperly, and the task manager immidiately says "not responding". The setup icon appears in the taskbar, but will not bring up a window or begin running the program. Hovering over the icon shows the outline of a window but it does not load.

I must admit I have very little technical knowledge so ideas would be appriciated.

My laptop is a HP Dv6 running Windows 7 so there shouldn't be a compatibility issue, but alas, I am out of ideas.

Captcha: meat with gravy. How's that for irony, I thought that's what I would be getting from SHODAN...

Hmm, I only played it briefly - getting right into it is the weekend's objective - but what time I did spend earlier was working through this [http://www.gog.com/forum/system_shock_2/system_shock2_faq_patches_mods_recommendations/page1] page in getting some mods set up. The first, most basic, most important one is an update to the ss2tool, whatever that really is, which seems to fix a lot of problems. I think the one GOG is using is out of date or something. The rest of the mods are just tarting things up a bit.

Give it a whirl and see if it fixes things for you. Again I didn't try the game without it so can't comment, but it works with it so can't be doing much wrong. I also gave a wee donation to the site maintainer's PayPal.

Edit: I'm on Windows 7 as well. The SS2 install defaulted for me to C:\GOG Games\System Shock 2, which is what the mods/patches are recommending; i.e. outside of Program Files or Program Files (x86). It was all pretty easy to follow. Delete a folder and a few files to begin with, patch the ss2tool (all self-installing, requires an internet connection), then any and all of the listed mods are installed in the same fashion by unpacking the .zip/.7/.rar folders into the same same location.

I have also run SS2 on windows 7 (64bit) after using the ss2tool. All the things you need to know are in this thread http://www.gog.com/forum/system_shock_2/system_shock2_faq_patches_mods_recommendations/page1

I managed to install System Shock 2 it on my linux partition and it seems to be running fine. However I have come across the problem of gog installers crashing occasionally before. Sometimes the best way to install gog games when this happens is either to re-download the installer as it may have been corrupted or use an inno extractor to unpack the installer file and then run the game executable.

Some helpful links;

http://innounp.sourceforge.net/

This method worked perfectly for me in Linux, so it should have no problem working in Windows also.

The first thing to always try is to delete the game completely, then re-download it. Which is sometimes hard to do if it took hours :) But sometimes things just don't download quite right and become broken. Failing that, follow the link from another poster to the gog forums. Always answers there.

Thank you all for your responses. It took several re-downloads but somehow it just started working on its own!

Such is the nature of computer beasts.
