Hello. Im 35, not dumb but defiantly uneducated. Ive worked manual type jobs since I was a teenager and my lower back and right shoulder is stuffed. SO I want like a indoor type job but Im afraid I wont be qualified to do anything that is not back breaking..... I'm also not pretty, like I look like manual labor type guy you know. So Im thinking of maybe going back to school and getting qualified to sit on my arse all day. I dont know exactly what I want to study yet......i've just never met a guy who transitioned from my type of work to not my type of work. generally at 40 your on the disability pension popping pills all day. So, anyone gone back to school in their 30s?? was it weird sitting next to a bunch of young people who dont realize their music sucks??

Going back to college now, you'll probably be surprised at the number of people who are around your age and in the same position. Focus on getting the qualification necessary for the career you want and you'll be fine; the age difference will become water under the bridge when you're sufficiently far into the course that you've clearly demonstrated you're committed to finishing it.

EDIT: There was someone in their 30s at my last university, when I was going into the second year. As a result of smoking cannabis and getting caught by the fire department after they left the toaster on in their apartment, I don't think they were there for long. The only thing that really stuck out about them was how much they acted like a stoner from one of those Judd Apatow films.

you could probably just walk into a job in customer service or cold calling which may be a pay rise depending on what your jobs are like, good thing is it's pretty easy and if you are not a complete idiot and can hang around a few years the high staff turnover usually means some upwards mobility.

I went back to school at 25. I had decided to learn a useful skill and I also wanted a qualification so as to be able to fill out the blank section on my C.V. labelled 'education'.
I did a course in engineering and later an apprenticeship. Now you may be thinking 'oh engineering? that's still kinda manual labour'
well, yeah. I learnt welding which can be labour intensive but I also learnt machining which can be pretty cushy.
At my previous job I managed to work myself into a position where I was in the office with the clever clogs, programming jobs for a CNC mill. A job you usually need to go to school for to learn CAD and CAM software, so going back to school did open doors for me.

On the other hand I detested going back to school.
I was in a class with a load of teenagers that just didn't care. They were being made to go to college by their employers for various jobs and to them it was just a big muck about.
Some of the teachers I found to be hard to get along with. I think that because they were so used to dealing with irritating teenagers, some had developed this 'fed up' attitude and could be quite patronising at times.
Because I had been out working since I was 16 and had gotten to that stage in life where people treat you with respect and as an adult, I found that to be really annoying.
Other cons were I had to take a little time off work and thus lost some income.

But anyway it was worth it and opened doors for me. My experience was a little negative but no doubt it varies from school to school, good luck if you do go for it.

I went back into education aged 26, although there were people on my course aged up to 50. This was for teaching, so it's not surprising it appealed to a slightly older demographic. I had a great time, in pretty much all regards (apart from funding) it was more enjoyable and productive than back when I was 18.

I wouldn't sweat it too much, I expect there are plenty of other people in your position. Depends on what you want to study, of course. Management or finance, you'll probably blend right in. Contemporary Jazz, maybe not so much.

I'm 25 and restarted school this year. It's been a fine experience. Nobody really has any ageist issues against me being up to 7 years older than most other other students.

My dad also went back in his 40s, and is finishing soon. He's had a good experience too as many of his friends have also decided to go back and he's been able to make due with the other students helping for group projects as well.

Just treat it like a work environment. Some are older, some are younger, but you all are there for the same reason and most of you are on an even playing field with experience.
