Going topless is overrated

I really don't like taking off my shirt in public. This isn't because I'm bashful or ashamed of myself, but because being shirtless makes me feel inherently self conscious. Makes me think "That TV show Cops is going to do a raid on this place any second because it's always shirtless hillbillies." The other factor is that when it's warm enough to take one's shirt off, it usually also means a painful sunburn. Then I have to apply smelly and sticky sunscreen, which feels far more uncomfortable than a shirt. Then the sunblock barely ever works properly anyway. If I wait until the sun goes down on a hot summer night, that means annoying mosquito bites, which also means smelly sticky bug spray.

I bring this up because every single thread I see on this has women saying something to the effect "If it were socially acceptable or legal for me to go topless, I'd totally do it" or "I wish I could take my shirt off." Really, ladies? I can't imagine anyone complaining about even the oldest / most out of shape woman cooling down by going topless. And since most places the average male is socially "allowed" to go topless is on private property, it would also be legal for a woman to do exactly the same. I know guys can do it in public parks, while jogging, or at the beach, but why aren't there topless chicks everywhere mowing their grass or sunbathing in the backyard?

I haven't been to Vancouver, Canada, but isn't it legal for women to be topless anywhere in public? Are there topless women everywhere? I doubt it. Because it's overrated. (BTW, I personally still think it should be legal everywhere. I just think women wouldn't do it anyways.)

I don't think women don't go topless because "it's overrated". It would still have a shit-load of stigma attatched to it, not to mention people would stare.

We've had our repressive ideas about "modesty" for centuries, it doesn't come and go depending on local law, it's also something that has fostered our boob obsession. In cultures where women go topless as the norm, they don't care to sexualise every bit of nudity.

People do get "offended" by nudity, not through logic, just because they've been raised that way. I know people who wear clothes to bed...in the middle of summer. I couldn't imagine being so uncomfortable with nudity, which I believe to be extremely comfortable.

Lol. Yankee misconceptions. They're only allowed to be topless when they ride their polar bears to work...

Also, plenty of girls I know nude sunbathe in their own yards when it's nice out, provided they have a fence. I think you need to get out of the cities, because people are way more willing to shed their clothes in rural areas.

I agree, there are just some people that no one wants to see out of any of their clothes. Example: Me.

I love going around topless even if I'm chubby and pasty because I like being FREEE, plus I never get sunburned and I grew up in Central America SO MOSQUITOES GOT NOTHING ON ME

but back to the topic, since women can never do it without getting eye raped it isn't overrated to them. They always have to wear something and from experience ( I lost a bet and wore a bikini while rollerblading down Venice Beach) its annoying as hell just to be sweating in two places and have cloth stick to you.

I think societies view on nudity is overrated. If we weren't such pervs and loved boobs and over sexualized them then women going around topless wouldn't be a problem.

Yes, going without clothing is rather over-rated. We sort of need clothing that it is much too impractical to go without it. The only reason why people have made it legal in some places to go topless is because people cry about it.

I wear clothing to bed during the summer... of course it's not that warm here and I rather like feeling snug.

Also, the bit about nudity differs culture to culture. Some places that we deem as "third-world" have people nude or near to it. Of course, the reason being really has nothing to do with sexuality but due to their environment. For example, I believe there are some tribes in places in Africa that are still basically stone age and clothing is at a very minimal. This is just part of their culture (and lack of technology) and most importantly to adapt to their environment. Many of us live in places where clothing is just too engrained and necessary for us.

yep. same here. but i found a great way to lose weight: stay up late and eat the following: bacon & toast (lunch) and rice & fish (dinner) every day. thats literally all ive eaten this weekend and i lost a stone. i actually lost my taste for crisps... and staying up late keeps your body using energy.

Huh, cool. I'll have to try that tactic sometime!

you think women don't go topless because they think it's overrated? How about the fact that they don't want every men to stare at their breasts? I live in Vancouver, and no I've never seen any women walking around topless.

Personally I'm not too concerned with who's naked in public. I mean it would be kind of strange to walk outside and find a large number of people without clothes on but if it was a common thing I'm sure I'd get used to it. Obviously some people would be more offended by this but if that's how the laws are(which they are in my native Ontario) and people feeling like being nude... good for them?

Note: I do actually see a lot of women that are topless at beaches, it's not that big of a deal and I've never heard of anyone who goes to a beach being offended by the amount of clothing that both sexes are not wearing.

I was just there. I saw three women go topless... all were part of an anarchist hippie group taking free chili from the Chili Wagon on Commercial Drive.

Twelve days, several thousand people, and three topless hippies, two of them were OLD, too. And two of them looked pretty darn cold and uncomfortable.

I live in Ontario Canada and it's perfectly legal for women to be topless anywhere that men can be. Needless to say though I don't think I've ever seen a topless female walking down the street, or even at a public beach.

I don't know if it's an instilled sense of self consciousness, bad weather or bugs that keep us from walking around partially nude here, but meh, power to the people that want to express their freedom I guess? :p
