Hi,
I'm trying to get into rpgs and I have a couple in my collection I haven't dug into much yet and I'm also interested in any recommendations for good rpgs to start with.
Here's some that I haven't touched in my collection.
1. FFVI - seen some of it and like the look of the story
2. Dark chronicle (or dark cloud 2)

My platform of choice is either ps1, ps2 or (surprise!) ps3
I don't mind old school graphics either.

Legend of Dragoon is the typical RPG that isn't very hard. Great for starters. (PS1)
Persona 3 on Easy is a great introduction to the genre. (PS2)

Persona 3 or 4, on easy. They are worthy challenges on even easy, but easy in those games is a great place for getting into RPGs, as I can attest.

I'd recommend Oblivion, Fallout 3/NV, Dragon Age or Final Fantasy 3, 4, 7, 9 or 12. I've heard a lot of people say that 6 and 10 are good but I never really liked either.

Do not try Demon's Souls as a beginner unless you're good at learning from mistakes and are prepared to make a hell of a lot of them.

In fact even RPG experts need to take that advice cause the game isn't hard just very unforgiving.

Neverwinter Nights 2. Even if you know nothing about the combat system, lore, or stats, it has a decent learning curve that rewards thought. Besides, combat feels rewarding, as there are multiple ways to approach a situation. Do you run in, and have your wizard melt everything with a fireball? Or send in the rogue to backstab and debliate the monster? It also has a two axis alignment system, that allows you to more richly role play.

I'd say try Oblivion if you wanna have no obligation towards a forced linear story and just explore ruins and Oblivion Gates. Pretty relaxing and it's not forcing you into anything.
If you prefer just killing stuff and leveling up Torchlight is a good starter.

Then again you list jRPGs as what you want so probably this isn't helping at all.

Demon's Souls.
If you don't role-play, shit'll get real.
Dude... DS is raping people as we speak (they grow to like it sometimes), it's hardly a beginner's game.

Final Fantasy X on PS2.

Fallout is a very versatile RPG which you can play without any RPG experience. Preferably Fallout 3 because it's basically a FPS/RPG which is by many seen as a masterpiece. It's probably pretty cheap by now, since it's already aged a slight bit.

Trinity Universe and Disgaea 3.

I suck at writing short reviews for games, but they're both good games. Not too difficult, Trinity Universe is a bit short(maybe 20 hours, but there is a New Game Plus [http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/NewGamePlus] option) but both require a bit of grinding to make the game easier.

Knights of the Old Republic, Oblivion, Fallout 3 and New Vegas, the Mass Effect games.

KotOR needs the biggest understanding of stats of the lot of them, and its not exactly heavy on it by any means.

Try Earthbound. Easy, but fun, and with some EXTREMELY intimidating bossfights (Don't look it up. It'll spoil the surprise).

-Check PSN for any PSX game developed by Square. They're probably good. Legend of Dragoon is not currently offered in any other language besides moonspeak, I think. Even in areas where it's available and, therefore should be offed in English, such as Hong Kong or Singapore.
-Megaman Legends is another good one. I think it's available on PSN too.
-Maybe it's just nostalgia, but I also love Wild ARMS
-Blizzard currently offers Diablo 2 for download on their website. It will probably run on most laptops.
-If you have an iPod, consider looking up Secret of Mana

I don't recommend WRPGs on the console. At least not the good ones, anyway. I don't think Jade Empire or KoTOR were released on any Sony products.

Yeah, all these choices I agree with. None of them do exactly alot of hand holding but they are all pretty easy to get the hang of.

Also, I played KOTOR long before I had any concept of the dice rolls behind the gameplay, and I did fine.

I really enjoy RPS games, it's the same thing as RPG's but with guns so I'll say borderlands and fallout 3, man I must say I love those games.

But good RPG's... Fable lost chapters, Oblivion or WoW private servers.
