I'd like to try to get my nephew into RPG's. I was thinking of either Xenoblade or The Last Story, but I wasn't sure.

He has a Wii and a 360. If he still had his DS I'd have him play Pokemon, but he doesn't have it anymore.

Any suggestions? Thanks.

UPDATE 12/5/12: I've already decided to get him and his brother Pokemon games for Christmas as they just got a new 3DS

Thank you all for the suggestions however. I wish you all a Happy Holiday! :D

well do you think he'd like jrp's or wrpg's more? sounds like your suggesting more jrpg's to him (which is fine)

for the 360, skyrim is as good as any a place to start, or for the wii i'd suggest this:

http://www.amazon.com/Spectrobes-Origins-Nintendo-Wii/dp/B0026IUSXS%3FSubscriptionId%3D19BAZMZQFZJ6G2QYGCG2%26tag%3Dsquid814482-20%26linkCode%3Dxm2%26camp%3D2025%26creative%3D165953%26creativeASIN%3DB0026IUSXS

it's fun and not too hard on the rpg side, while allowing co-op if he wants you/someone to play with him through the story on certain parts.

cheap game too

While Xenoblade is a great game, I don't think it's right for an 8 year old.

I haven't played it, but I heard that Blue Dragon for the 360 is OK for kids.

Isn't the start of Xenoblade a tad violent?
He's into CoD and Halo. So I don't think that'll be too big of an issue.

Oh yeah, I've completely forgotten about that. That would actually work out pretty well.

Go with something lighter. The PSP version of Final Fantasy is good, Chrono Trigger is light enough, though I think if you wanted a twinge darker that he could still handle, I'd go with Dragon Quest V.

All of that is emulatable, though you'll have to settle for GBA on the original FF.

Skyrim could work to, as he has played a bit of it before at a friend's house. I guess I could give him my copy.

If he's got access to a PC built in the last 8 years or so, KotOR - or if you must see him dragged up, I guess the 360 should be able to play it still, oui?

But yeah, I played that when I was 9 and that was that. I just hit recommended for all the stats and shit on my first go through. I'm surprised my 9-year-old body survived the rippling waves of orgasm that wracked it when the twist came along. If ever there was a thing I wish I could play again for the first time, it'd be that.

Dark Souls, and put it on youtube!

Seriously though when I was 8 I was playing Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest, Zelda, and Crystalis. It did me good to get my ass kicked for crossing that bridge.

If you give them an easy game, they will get bored.

If you can find it though, I think Lunar 1/2 would be pretty good choices. Or Alundra of you wanna blow their mind.

That could work too. He loves Star Wars.

Both it and KotOR 2 are now on Steam - only trouble is the first game (and I think the second) doesn't support widescreen resolutions. But KotOR 2 does now have the community patch for the missing content.

I would recommend Ys (you can get it on virtual console on Wii), but then I remember what evil those developers have come up with. If that's his first RPG he will likely not want to play another.

Try with Super Paper Mario, it's great for his age since it offers a light story with plenty of humour and simple mechanics. It's not the best Paper Mario game nor is it the best RPG, but for a first encounter it's good.

Blue Dragon is also a decent RPG and it got a more serious approach to the genre than Super Paper Mario which is more of a platforming game with RPG elements.

I also want to mention my favourite game for the 360, Tales of Vesperia (it's on games on demand). It got a decent story with a surprisingly realistic approach to confronting criminals with political or economic status. It got some light hearted humour, a combat system which allows local multiplayer. Really all in all this is a great game and the main reason I got a 360.

I would suggest Harvest Moon. Harvest Moon was one of my sons favorite games when he was 8, I think that is down to the continuing purpose - it's not like you have to defeat bosses, you have to produce good vegetables and fruit, look after cows, be a little farmer and get married, have kids. It might seem a bit tame, but really it's a very challenging game under the surface.

There is always pokemon, but really I don't see why every 8 year old, ever, has to like pokemon. Hell, I'd be tempted to put a pokemon game next to Skyrim and let him choose, nip that dirty little habit in the bud before it starts :D.

And you win the thread, congrats.

Bastion works well, easy to learn. Also have a cozy wonderful narrative.

...

Still reading? Go get it!

Edit: Also yes, Dark souls. Back in my day, it was hard and we liked it!

As others have said, Bastion. Kotor is good game too, although you might have to help him with bosses or selecting his equipment.

Well since he's got a Wii he can still play Pokemon. There's the Gamecube RPGs they released. Although I think they might be hard to get hold of now. They're good though, or at least the first one is. I've never played the second but I hear it's mostly more of the same, even more so than Pokemon usually is. It takes place in the same region. You need to make sure you have the right Wii though. Later versions don't play GC games.
