Can anyone suggest to me a good MMO or MMORPG? I want a game my friend and I can pick up. She's a big WoW and jrpg fan and I'm more of a fan for FPS. Although I do play the odd jrpg and fighting game.

I don't want to start WoW because I would end up paying a 10$ a month subscription and would only have time to play maybe a few hours on weekends.

Basically:

- F2P MMORPGS (Atlantica Online, BOI, KO, etc.)
- P2P MMORPGS (WoW, DAoC, EQ, etc.)

What you have to realise is that even though F2P MMORPGS have the word "Free" in the name, they are in reality far from that. Out of personal experience, I can and will guarantee that you will dish out much more money for a F2P MMORPG over a P2P MMORPG.

If, however, you really do intend on playing only a few hours on weekends, and seeing you're reluctant to spend money to play, I would recommend a F2P MMORPG, because it is free to download, install, play etc.

Try Atlantica Online, but I warn you - as soon as, or, if you get addicted to it, you will see the true evil (yes, evil) of the F2P MMORPG market.
I won't go into detail of it all.

I don't mind purchasing a game. I just don't want to end up paying for something I won't use to its fullest extent.

Buy Guild Wars, then get hyped for Guild Wars 2.

Guild Wars is great, and it's free.
Then there's Dungeons and Dragons Online Unlimited. It's completely free to download and play. Both are really great, and not that difficult to pick-up and play.

If you need some lower spec'd games that are fun then here's a website with 6 of them made by the same developers..I think..

I would suggest Conquer Online, haven't played it in ages but hopefully its still good BUT it is free, but like every other F2P MMORPG there is always the catch of being able to buy ingame items with actual money..

I recently tried the free trial for Darkfall. Surprisingly good considering it's history. If you are a FPS fan this certainly helps the transition into the MMORPG format due to it's Oblivion-like combat system and lack of levels. Heavy PvP in it's design, with player owned cities, and a detailed crafting system.

That said, this game has a ways to go. I think that because of it's small, devoted player base, the developers don't receive the feedback necessary to improve the game properly. This game is difficult, it's interface is unfriendly and the death penalties are brutal like older MMOs (you die, you drop all of your inventory you are carrying), leading to an increase in ganking. Not to mention the sheer amount of grind required to improve your skills.

In a nutshell, it's unpolished, but has potential. Not entirely convinced to sign up myself, but you have nothing to lose from a free trial.

WoW, especially since Cataclysm is coming out in december and it's a return to vanilla as difficulty (MASSIVE YAY).

Lord of the Rings Online its turned free
Lotro has so many heavy limits on what you can do. Micro-transactions kill the free element of this game. Auction house access, mounts, even caps to levels, money, and inventory space are all dependent on Micro-Transactions. With the amount of money you'd have to spend to get some of the basic amenities, you might as well sign up.

EVE Online (If you don't mind the huge learning curve)
or
Battlegrounds World War II Online (If you don't mind the learning curve and not so good graphics)

The problem is that you're going to end up paying for a subscription wherever you go.

If you're willing to drop some money on a better, P2P mmo, then I'd still go WoW. It's not *that* labor intensive, and it's still more popular than God.

If you're a sci-fi buff and love accounting, you might try out EVE Online. The benefit is that you can train your skills while you're offline, as they train in real time. The drawback is that your skills train in real time, so playing the actual game is virtually useless except for grinding for cash and rep. Plus, the game is so freaking empty.

If you're looking just for a F2P, LotRO and DDO are good ones, both released by Turbine. Be warned, however: the micro-transaction model might *look* good at first, but you'll pay eventually if you go anywhere with them. Oh yes. You'll pay.
