Good online RPG?

I've been looking around the deepest corners of the internet to find a simple online rpg to play with friends, but looking has been difficult due to the massive amount of junk MMOs out there. So I've come to this site to ask you escapist members what good online RPG's exist that are hack and slash, non MMORPG's, where you can just explore and muck about.

If you just want hack 'n slash, why not give Diablo2 a shot? No subscription fees, and you can play with your buddies

I played a decent amount of it a while ago, but I've not played much of it recently. I should get back into it.

I played around the first few weeks when it was made (it was still a contest entry!).
A lot has changed since then, but the core is still more or less similar.

Thanks for the welcome, Georgie. I tried out that Realm of the Mad God, and it was delightfully awesome. It kind of reminds me of the old school gauntlet games. And DDO might be exactly what I am looking for. Thanks for all the response!
