Thanks for the responses so far. I do have a question for all of you though: will I still be able to enjoy MSG4 even if I haven't played the previous MSG games?
I know this has already been answered but I wanted to put in my 2 cents.

MGS4 is really an amazing game, most of the "omg there's no gameplay its all a movie" crap is just 360 fanboy rhetoric they use to denounce a title they can't play. The game is approx 20 hours long, of those 20 hours, maybe 5 of them are cutscenes, so there is still a good 15 hours of rock solid gameplay and some of the best boss battles you'll ever play. There's also a multiplayer that not many people really play anymore but its worth a shot for shits in giggles, multiplayer is free after all.

As a long time fan of the MGS series, I will say this, you're not going to understand what's going on. MGS4 basically wraps up all the loose ends from the previous 3 titles, so you will be quite lost when it comes to the story. That doesn't mean that the gameplay, graphics, and all around technical spectacle of MGS4 isn't brilliant though, it truly is. I've honestly never heard amazing cutscenes be considered a "negative" for any game in the past. Leave it to the 360 fanboys to come up with one of the most inane video game arguments of all time.

If the story really bothers you, you can either A. play the first 3 games because like 4, they are all amazing games, a little dated now mind you, but still great games none the less.

As for my other recommendations (many of them have already been said, but they're all great games so ill say them again)

MGS4
inFAMOUS
Uncharted (especially with uncharted 2 on its way later this summer/fall)
Killzone 2 - one of the best shooters on any platform.
Resistance 1&2 - another great shooter, more of an arcade feel than Killzone
Little Big Planet
Wipeout HD (i don't like racing games, but even i like this one).
Fl0wer - Really a beautiful game, very tranquil and relaxing, cheap too.
Ratchet and Clank
Folklore
Valkryia Chronicles

Games coming out within the next year or so:

Uncharted 2
God of War III
Heavy Rain
Fat Princess
The Last Guardian
MAG

All these titles have had very strong presence at GDC and E3, I can't imagine any of them being disappointments.

Huge MGS fanboy here to say there is NO EFFING WAY this game is 20 hours long. I think my first playthrough exploring everything, without a guide, watching every cutscene/prologue/epilogue took about 15 hours, being half movie and half gameplay. None of the MGS titles are that long, and all of them can be beaten in fewer than 4 hours each.

Try outside. I just went and picked one for the sake of it. Unless you live in some large city and have to cough up ten bucks to see artificial flowers, which is tragic in a deep sense.
Don't be idiots guys... that's a horrible argument. Would you say rockband is a stupid game because you could just learn how to play a real instrument, or a sports game is a waste of money because you could just go play soccer or football, or any fighting game is a waste of money because you could just go learn martial arts? Why buy a shooter when you could go play laser tag or join the military? Why play tetris when you could just stack some blocks?
Why play video games at all when there are hundreds of more productive things you could be doing with your time?
People don't buy it to look at flowers. People buy it for the experience of the game.

The game is very relaxing, the sound track is excellent, the graphics are beautiful and artistic, and the gameplay is extremely fluid and fun.

Ehh... my first playthrough was 19 hours 38 minutes (according to my save files). That's 20 hours in my book. Even if your playthrough was 15 hours, there aren't 7.5 hours of cinematics, so there's no way it was half gameplay half movie.

You're talking about MAG, and its 256 players, not 160 XD

Thirdly, wow. I'm starting to really think that buying the console is worth it. Too bad I only have 400 something euros, else I would've bought a whole cart full of games...
You should try using Amazon's UK site, some games are crazily cheap there. You can get MGS4, LBP, Uncharted and Ratchet and Clank for the price of a normal game (should be an ideal starter pack :D). I'm not kidding. Import costs a bit but it's still worth it if you live in a different European country (I'm assuming since you mentioned Euros). For me it pays importing them to Germany when I'm there.

Who is that mysterious DJ people keep talking about, I'm curious.

http://www.weebls-stuff.com/wab/safety/ that, basically.

And wow... This thread is still going.

It might be quite hard for me to find a backwards compatible PS3, by the way. Only one backwards compatible model of the PS3 was issued to PAL regions.

Infamous is supposed to be really good, I got it but have been unable to play it. LittleBigPlanet is a hoot just for its insane Skateboard bonus level. Also I liked Resistance 2 for the online Co-Op. Flower also seems good for downloadable. Finally MotorStorm is a brilliant racing game

Edit: Fuck how'd I forget Valkyria Chronicles. That game kicks ass.
