This is something I've just never seen enough of: tank combat games. Most of the vehicle-based ground combat games out there focus on walkers, but I'm being bluntly honest when I say that I much prefer treads to legs.

I've already got a few. Panzer Front, from the PS1, I've played but wasn't terribly impressed by. I've also got Seek & Destroy for the PS2 and Battletanx: Global Assault for the N64, but I haven't actually played them yet.

What I'm looking for isn't a simulator of actual tank warfare, but at the same time not as ridiculous and cartoony as something like S&D. Honestly, something like World of Tanks or Armored Warfare but single-player would be preferable.

Anyone have any ideas I should look for?

All I can think of are the Armored Fist games.
Made by NovaLogic, the same people who did the Delta Force games.
Only played a demo of AF3. It seemed solid enough, although it may not have aged very well since then.

Um, no thanks, that looks like too much of a sim for me.

Valkyria Chronicles is the one game with the coolest tank I've ever used. It isn't just tank combat, but you do always have this one tank that is special and you can use it all the time and it's hype. Also the game is all in all amazing storywise, it's what Xcom ripped off the gameplay from as well.

World of Tanks.

I mean, sure, the main game mode has you and 14 bots skirmishing against 15 bots, there isn't really a regard for historical accuracy as far as team composition goes, the AI on both sides is occasionally densely stupid, and it requires a constant internet connection for some reason, but other than that I quite like it.

I think you just managed to trigger me three times in one short post.

My brow is in danger of twitching clean off my face.

Apologies, truth be told I have been accused of trolling before when I was merely stating my honest feelings on issues, so this is sadly less than surprising.

Playing Valkyria Chronicles made me go out and start a Imperial Guard tank army in 40k because of how much I loved that tank.

It is one of the most fun tactical games I have ever played and whilst it isn't just a tank game, the tank is the main character & surely you'll agree that no matter the game a tank unsupported by infantry is a dead tank.

Yeah, it feels all the more special because you have to srategize around the tank so even the foot soldiers would base their actions around the tank's capabilities. I remember one mission where the enemy would fire and instantly kill my troops at they walked but the tank would be unharmed so I ended up doing a moving barrier where the tank would move a bit, then the troops cover behind it, then the tank moving a bit more, while always covering them and soaking the hits, to get the troops beyond the open area, it was amazing how such a creative approach was possible.

Yeah, this discussion is making me re-install and play Valkyria Chronicles when I get home. One of my favorite games on PS3 and now it's on steam it so much easier to access.

You may laugh but Crysis has a couple of good tank-centric levels. It also falls right smack in the middle of "cartoony" and "simulation". They look badass, they sound badass and you can really cruise in them while you're blowing shit up. There might even be mods to use a tank through most of the game.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who enjoyed the tank mission(s?) in Crysis. And it comes not too long before the game goes completely to shit(around the time you get to the spaceship).

Yeah, especially the zero G shit. All I ever thought was "get me outa here!!"

It's bad enough having to fight aliens, but a nightmare when half the controls are removed and you're floating around some space age butthole of a level.

RE: Valkyria Chronicles: I'm not playing that anime shit. And on top of that, it's basically a turn-based strategy game. DOUBLE NOPE.

RE: World of Tanks: Already played it, don't like it. Mainly because FUCK ARTY AND EVERYONE THAT PLAYS IT. Armored Warfare is only slightly less bullshit with its arty. I was mainly using those two games as points of reference anyway.

RE: Crysis: I've actually got the original on my 360, but I haven't been able to get to any tank levels yet. Damn shame.
