Hi guys. I'm looking to get some good speakers to play FPS games with. I figure that sound, and specifically good surround sound, can make a significant difference when I play since I'll be able to better hear people are around me. Most of my friends say "just get a good pair of headphones", but personally my ears hurt after a couple of hours with headphones on, so I'd rather get some good speakers.

Anyway, which are the currently best speakers for gaming would you say? I searched around and found a couple of resources like http://www.techradar.com/reviews/pc-mac/peripherals/speakers-and-headphones/speakers and http://www.consumertop.com/best-gaming-speakers/ that seem okay, but I find it hard to determine if sources like that are biased or not. Therefore I'd like to get your views on which ones I should go with. I currently only have some really old Logitech speakers, so I don't think it will be hard to find some better once than those.

While the model is a bit old now, I still very much love my Klipsch Promedia 2.1 setup. They sound great. I think you can still buy them for around $150. Totally worth the investment.

This isn't so much an answer as to the very best, because that'll be some gratuitously expensive multi-unit Bose monstrosity. The following is a recommendation for the low-medium price range.

I don't really have room for a 5:1 setup at my desk, so I was aiming for a 2:1 setup. I also didn't want to spend too much, so price 'efficiency' was a concern. Ended up settling on the Logitech Z323 which, for the price, have proved to be really good over the past year or so.

They aren't as good as really expensive premium stuff, but compared to other 2:1s I've used they perform well and give you decent surround if you space them out properly (at least 1m between the two speakers, tilted inwards, audi setup properly). I've just been using them to play the original Ghost Recon, and if they give adequate directionality for that ridiculously hardcore tactical experience, they should be ok for most FPS!
They've also got pretty solid bass for the price - which may not be important to you but thought I'd mention.
