Greeting's fellow Escapians...or whatever you want to be called.

I'm currently in search for a good, thought prevoking anime for my friend, he really likes Death Note, and I'm trying to find him something he will enjoy. Does anybody have any possible suggestions.

P.S: I'm strictly looking for ANIME here, I don't think my friend has the time to read manga.

Uhm, I liked Ghost in the Shell and its whole philosophical "what is real, what is life, what is consciousness"-theme.
I don't know Death Note, though, so I don't know if it would be anything your friend would like.

Really? Could I have a quick synopsis of the story so I can judge whether my friend will like it or not?

Anime is not supposed to be thought-provoking. It's supposed to be tentacles.

Fooly Cooly.
Not really thought provoking ( but neither is Death Note ) - Cowboy Bebop

I'll keep it at that. If he is new better give him something a newb will get.

Neon Genisus: Evangelion. The start is really slow, but the end is epic. A recomendation from me.

Well maybe Death Note wasn't "thought-provoking" as such, but it really got you deep into the story and it had a decent story, not just about some ninja's trying to get some other ninja or a ginger haired guy turning into a death god for no apparent reason other than he can.

Dothack and Full Metal Alchemist? They're good, I don't know if you'll consider them "thought-provoking" though.

well esentially its the tale of a pack of wolves taking human form (not were wolves) seacrhing for a place called 'Paradise', which is essentially the last safe place for there kind. Wolves have been hunted to extinction and are hated by human kind.

They have to find someone called the lunar maiden in order to find 'Paradise'. This is all i can really say without ruining the plot. It is alot better then it sounds as well

Code Geass, It combines the thought battles of Death note and throws in Mechs. The First Season is 25 Episodes and I'm watching the second Season on adult Swim.It has some cool themes of nationality and justise.

Also he your friend gets thew time have him read the Death Note Manga, I thought it was better than the anime

Me and some other friends of mine have recommended FMA, simply for the reason it's not about some orange tracksuited FAGTARD. (Sorry to the Naruto fanboys/girls, I like the anime, just hate it's main character.)

I personally find there is a VERY fine line between deep and interesting, and stupid and pretentious. It's a line that everyone has to draw for themselves, of course.

Moribito has very good characterization and some powerful themes, The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya is good (if a little Mind Screwy), and Rozen Maiden approaches a few themes with a good deal of levity and subtlety. TVTropes wiki (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/HomePage) provides a decent summary of all these (without being too long-winded).

The odd thing is, that every anime that the other posters have mentioned so far, I enjoyed on the first viewing, but when I went to watch them a second time, I found them insufferable (though in the case of Death Note, that may have had to do with the English translation). Take my suggestions with a grain of salt if you must.

Well, as far as something to be a little more stimulating than a show where we get fights that last entire Disks (And those fights suck anyway.), then I'd recommend the following.

Infinite Ryvius is a Sci-Fi Drama that lasts for 26 Episodes. ANN does plot summary well, so here's their page on said show - http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/anime.php?id=411

Next, we have WXIII - Patlabor The Movie 3, another Sci-Fi-y drama. It's a feature-length movie, and once more, ANN's summary - http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/anime.php?id=660

To conculde, I point you at Perfect Blue, another movie. This isn't a sci-fi, but is a drama, a thriller, and a murder mystery, all rolled into one package. ANN's mini-plot synopsis is here - http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/anime.php?id=192

There you have it. Three thought provoking (Or at the very least, quite fantastic) Anime. Check the summary, and work out if your friend would like the sound of them. Or if you would, for that matter. I probably would recommend you both watch them, but if I said that, then I'd be /fanboying.
