With the release of Rift, many players are amazed at the gameplay, graphics, and similar easy to use interface(virtually the same as WoWs). Many that I have spoken to say that it trumps WoW in every way, being avid WoW players themselves. Do you think this is the beginning of the end for the dated superhero of MMORPGs, World of Warcraft?

Not by a mile. The game is real shiny and that's about it. There are already some incredibly glaring problems with core gameplay seen in just the first day from all I've heard. It doesn't have the Blizzard name behind it, nor the power of previous success of franchise behind it either.

Why would someone go to a game that does the same thing, only looking prettier? But still, the whole epic-ness that it seems to drive me towards is making want to pick up the demo.

I played the beta and thought it was just WoW done in a pallet of brown.

Hardly. It's just as colorful as WoW is, if not more so.
That's a lie. WoW is purposefully cartoonish, and therefore more colorful by design than Rift is or would ever be.

I don't have a dog in this fight, I quit wow long ago and will not go the route of massively multiplayer anymore.

BUT.

I've heard this song and dance before. I predict rift will do well for several months. Playerbase will peak. WoW-converts will return to WoW. We'll add rift to the pile of other failed high-fantasy (wow clone) MMOs.

This is what Rift promotions and advertising hacks actually believe

No. Rift is pretty rubbish. Prettier in a more realistic way, but the two are not necessarily mutually inclusive. The gameplay is as sexual abuse from a loved one and the music sucks.

I don't even play WoW, but if I was to play an MMO...

... it would be EVE. And then WAR. But THEN it would be WoW

You know, people ask this same question every time a new MMO comes out and you know what? The answer is always the same every time. No, of course not.
I've never played WoW or indeed any MMO, but I do know one thing, no MMO is ever going to unseat WoW from the MMORPGer throne by doing exactly the same thing as WoW does. To unseat WoW, they're going to have to do something different.

Rift will suffer the same fate as any other WoW clone, no matter how much better the interface or the gameplay is.

There's one aspect that MMO developers have overlooked that will make WoW's dominance of the MMORPG market unshakeable. If all of your MMO-playing friends are playing WoW, then you're going to play WoW.

If you have no friends who play WoW but want to play an MMO, go ahead and knock yourself out with Rift, but it's going to be a tough sell for anyone else because in order to get the full experience, they would have to persuade all their friends to switch over.

I pumped it to max graphics and it was still a bland colorless place.

On one hand, WoW was a ridiculously runaway success, for which Rift being its successor would demand a great deal of luck in being the right place at the right time. You can't predict that sort of thing.

On the other hand, one thing you can predict is that nothing lasts forever. World of Warcraft has been around for over seven years, it's a fossil, even with regular content injection, even with Cataclysm.

Why would I leave to a game that looks, and from what i've heard, plays like WoW? Only while WoW has had years to work out the kinks and already has a large community, Rift is starting new.

The main reason I play WoW is for my guild, and none of them have any intention of quitting for the "next WoW killer".

Also the "You're not in Azeroth" ads turn me off in a big way.

Im having a deja vu here. Some day even if some greater MMO comes out, no matter how good or hyped it is, people just wont bother and automaticly add it to the list of failed MMOs because all those who tried to compeat with WoW always failed. Maybe they will have chance after Blizzard will stop caring about it but thats like throwing away machine that print money.

What you said makes absolutely NO sense in today's world. The question is why WOULDN'T you?
If it's the same, which for WoW is great.. but prettier, the only logical sense would be to go to the same good-level game which looks better. That's how everything works nowadays. If you have some nice clothes, but are old and dirty, you go and buy new clean clothes, nay? Or almost any other consumer product to fill that gap
