Grammar being an annoyance

Do any of you get annoyed when someone doesn't spell something properly every time. I know sometimes when you type fast you don't notice mistakes but things like alot annoy the hell out of me. I have a hard time reading british writing because I know it's right where they come from and where I'm from it's spelled differently but they're technically both right. So what I want to know is if I'm crazy or not because getting this worked up about grammar seems a little strange to me but I can't help it. Maybe I should be an English teacher.

HOLY CRAP, you spelled English with a lower-cased "E"!!

I think if someone mistypes every once in a while, it's nothing to worry about. It's when people pretty much go out of their way to make their typing nearly unreadable that really bothers me. Saying "u" instead of "you". Is it really that hard to type those extra two letters to make yourself look infinitely more intelligent?

Or when people use the same amount of letters, or more, to convey the same word just because it matches their stupid way of typing.

Necro's right. The English language is the most bastardized and horrible language ever. Even when people type properly there's still situations where it's impossible to know what they're trying to convey without asking them what they mean. I can't use the word "elaborate" meaning to further express what they mean without them saying "what? that's not an elaborate comment".

Jeez. And then a lot of people have to come in and ruin the already nearly-unreadable language to the extent of it literally being unreadable in a lot of cases. I knew a guy from Britain once. He was talking to an ass guy I know and he said this:

"we haev fat kids leik u her w/ swords
i run 1 over w/ motobike
his falt"

I later found out he was saying, "We have fat kids like you here, but with swords. I ran one over with my motorcycle. It was his fault."

Me, I couldn't give two shits if someone spelled a lot, alot. In many states it's actually taught as 'alot'. It's not grammar, it's regional spelling. (Not to mention most people I've met say 'alot' and not, 'a lot'.)

actually correctly, it's "a lot", even google will correct it to "a lot" if you type in "alot"

not to pick on the OP but hella isn't a word. so really don't say how bad another person's grammar is unless you have perfect grammar.

and this issue isn't localized to english either, all languages have differences in their dialects. try living in quebec and speaking french there and then going to france and converse with them, you'll find it very difficult, i believe my friend's father compared the french spoken in quebec to that of the sound of a dog in a blender when we said how great quebecois french was

I wouldn't exactly get 'worked up' over it, but it's definitely worth watching your grammar and berating those (see Stammer's examples) who do their best to completely ruin a language I quite like. I'm always correcting my girlfriend's 'your/you're' mistakes, which make me miserable. Funnily enough, she moved out this week...

Poor spelling is irritating, as is poor use of punctuation and grammar.

My tip for the day is not to make a thread about the quality of writing on the internet unless yours is 110% perfect.

Wither way, bad spelling really irks me when its done somewhere where you should have time to type correctly IE: forums. However, when I'm talking with people on IM services, I really don't care, in fact, I enjoy using words like "prolly", "dunno" and "Astalapastabasta". I never type "teh" on purpose, unless I'm trying to be funny, same thing with "pwn", "omg", or "1337", although I've occasionally done the "teh" by mistake.

Walking Contradiction (Sorry if you're reading this, but I can't remember how you've shortened it) used to be quite bad, with lower-case instead of capitals, typos and bad grammar, but now he's cleaned up his act.

When people mix up "Your and You're" that gets my goat. And when they say "mined" instead of "mind" as in "never mind", that irritates me too.

I care enough to notice that the first sentence of the OP should have ended with a question mark.

I accept some slang and internet acronyms as acceptable and I even use a few, but it breaks my heart to proofread my classmates' papers to find that although they are intelligent and good people, they can't write to save their lives.

One of the worst verbal misuses, which I hear constantly, is that "axe" seems to have replaced the verb "ask". I nearly screamed when my high school Biology teacher would have this little toy axe during his review sessions, and he would wave it and say "Let me axe you a question!" After being forced to witness that once, I started skipping the class before a test.

I try my best to use grammar as well as possible on the internet, unless I'm using instant messenger where I really can't be bothered using full words. Firefox has a cool spell check feature which corrects any spelling mistakes (though it's American English so got to watch out for that!).

The grammatical errors which annoy me the most are the use of "your" for "you're" like "your stupid" instead of "you're stupid" and the use of "to" instead of "too" like "to much" instead of "too much". Minor points I know but it does make one wonder if these people even went to Primary School!

Totally with you on the apostrophes, particularly when mistakenly used to pluralise, as the mistakes tend to come in whopping great lists rather than the odd error.

Agreed, to all. Proper spelling at the very least would give the illusion of intelligence.

I tend to forgive very technical errors. I would rather see commas not used enough than used entirely too much, for example. MLA standards say that all punctuation should be included inside of quotation marks "Like this," but for the longest time when I wrote lists of quotation marks I would put the punctuation outside: "A", "B", and "C". I had a huge argument with my English teacher about this, because nobody bothered to tell me I was wrong until college. Things like that I deem forgivable simply because they're unknown to most of the English-speaking population.

"Your" and "you're" are very common mistakes, but shouldn't be. Anybody who paid attention in English class would know the difference and be able to apply it to real life. I learned these rules sometime around second grade, but I went to a private school so that may have been different for others. "It's" and "its" are slightly more forgivable because it's irregular in the possessive form.
