I recently decided to give the MMO genre another try, and as I have no interest in resubbing to my World of Warcraft account, I thought i might check out games running on the free to play model.

Considering the huge amounts of Free to Play MMOs now adrift on the gaming ocean, I would love to get your guys opinions/recommendations on which games you feel are the best or at least worth a try within the genre?

Also, which ones should be avoided?

Was close to resubbing to WoW last night, had the credit card out and everything. But decided nah, so I'll also be very interested in what this thread throws up.

Well, I've put serious hours into 3 F2P MMOs, those being DC Universe Online, APB: Reloaded and Dungeon Fighter Online.

I used to play DC Universe Online a long time ago, and I'd have to say that it's an OK title. You'll need to find a clan or something pretty early on, though. It can be hard to find parties to run with, and being in a clan would help with that a lot.

I would not recommend APB, though. It may be getting better, but it's entirely focused on PvP combat, and my time in the game I found quite infuriating. When I played it, it was also quite punishing to F2P players, with P2P getting some significant advantages. Things might have changed with the recent update, though.

Lastly, Dungeon Fighter Online. Well, I enjoy this quite a bit. It's got plenty of depth to it, and the unique style's quite cool. Plus, the F2P players get a fair shake at things. I'd have gone to P2P already if I had money, purely because it hasn't forced me to do so in order to play.

So, yeah. I'd recommend DFO and DC:UO.

Sadly I've found MMOs the worst type of F2P models, instead of FPSs where they can get away with just making you pay for cosmetics most MMOs tend to have areas locked off, trade limits or massive cooldown times on dungeons.

Wouldn't mind knowing of one not like that, but I think I'm just going to get Guild Wars 2 instead for my fix.

I'm jonesing hard, man.

Nah I just haven't played it since last summer when I got a month for free.
september was when i stopped, problem with trying a new mmo is having to find a new community. alot of the times guilds (or their equivalent in other games) will be "we are a group that came from game x, looking for more" and you feel the odd man out

Perfect World, Lord of the Rings Online and Aion are all pretty good. Well, those are the ones I've actually spent more than an hour on.

I'm at about level 58 or something now and haven't spoken to another human being on it apart from when I bought a shirt from someone. I'm antisocial even at WoW, haha.

While I think the FTP model in Lord of the Rings Online is a bit annoying(I used to play it before it went F2P) it is a great game. Great music, setting(duh) and pretty fun combat.

Also, does Guild wars 2 count? It doesn't have a subscription fee. It's looking great so far.

haha I imagine an exchanging of packages in a dark alley, playing with someone does increase the funlevel though. try it

You can try Star Trek Online. I like it enough to play it from time to time and I'm not into MMOs. I just love space battles in that game and upgrading my ship. Or you can wait for Star Wars The Old Republic to go f2p in a couple of months.

I normally recommend DDO as I've spent a good amount of time playing it on two seperate periods in the past. Though it's had a recent big expansion that I've not played, so I couldn't tell you about the current state of the game.

Content wise, just be aware there's lots to pay for. Most of the content is available through adventure packs, which typically contain a wilderness area, a number of dungeons, and often a raid quest to finish off with. Some of the packs are absolutely shite (Threnal springs to mind), while others are much better (Vale of Twilight is among my favourite DLCs of all time). With only the free content you can expect to get to about level 15ish (regular cap is 20, though I think the new expansion increases that with epic levels), but that's going to involve a lot of repetition and a few bottlenecks (most paying players will use the adventure packs for levelling purposes, with stuff like Splinterskull, Co6, Gianthold and Sands being much more preferable to the free quests).

You'll also start off less powerful than other players. New players get 28 points for attributes at character creation while those with "Veteran" status unlocked get 32 points; you can unlock veteran status in game (which takes bloody ages) or simply by paying for it (one way around this is using the Drow race, which is very easy to unlock in game, as they only get 28 points even as a veteran due to their stat bonuses, but they're not such a great race choice for a lot of classes). There's also tomes available in the store, which provide permanent (though non-stacking) attribute bonuses. Most end-game builds will presume a 32-point build with at least +2 tomes all around. Again the tomes are available in game (they are semi-regular drops in endgame quests), but not always at the point in the game that you need them. For instance a +2 Int tome can be used from level 7, but doesn't become a regular drop until around level 15ish, and the bonus you get from it (an extra skill point per level) is not retroactive. Another common issue is from Dex tomes, which in many builds are required for feat prerequisites (the Two Weapon Fighting line in particular), and must be used before reaching a certain level in order to not screw up your character (while there are many ways to "fix" a character, they again rely on either rare drops or forking out some cash).

I'm probably doing a really bad job of promoting the game to you, but really it's a good bit of fun and highly under-rated IMO. There are some really good quests available when you get into it; the raids Against the Demon Queen (Zawabi's Revenge) from Demon Sands and The Thirteenth Eclipse (The Shroud) from Vale of Twilight are probably my favourite ever MMO experiences.

There are a few non standard free to play games/MMOs coming up.

Firefall and Planetside 2 come to mind if you're interested in something different.

I could recommend Voyage Century Online. The game is fun and there are lots of different environments, but you end up hitting a brick wall around lvl 100 where you're equipment should probably be replaced, but farming the necessary mats takes like 3-6 months. Granted it will be top of the line end game gear but its still annoying.

I've played a little of RaiderZ recently, but that's in closed beta right now, so you might have to sign up for a key. Its pretty fun too. I think I might have a key laying around though so I'll check and maybe update later.

Perfect World and Forsaken World are good F2P MMO's but they're Korean I believe so they can be grindy as fuck.

Rusty Hearts is another one I enjoy. It's more of a hack and slash/dungeon crawler in the vein of Dungeon Fighter Online. Pretty good game however you end up running through the same dungeons multiple times for different quests, although you can change the difficulty it can get repetitive but it's still worth a look.
