http://www.telegraph.co.uk/earth/wildlife/8063852/Great-White-sharks-swim-off-coast-of-Britain.html

Steve Mills claims the Jaws-style killer beasts have been attracted to Britain by a shortage of prey in their natural habitat.

The savage sharks weigh more than a ton and are attracted by the smell of blood and the high numbers of mackerel in our shores.

Expert Steve said: "There are definitely Great Whites in our waters. The only reason they do not get caught by fisherman is because they do not use the right tackle.

"They will be here because of the stocks of mackerel and will probably be feeding on pollack and cod.

"There has been sightings in the past but no photographic evidence but that definitely does not mean they are not here."

Mr Mills, a fishing expert, also thinks anglers could already be hooking the predators without realising it because they are so hard to catch.

"People could have been catching the beasts for years but it is hard to actually fish them up," he said.

"They could be getting a bite but the thing could feel unmovable because they are so big and strong and then just give up."
I've been in the water with these guys as long as you respect them they'll generally not bite your legs off.

"Respect"? They're sharks! You were lucky! I say get some oxygen tanks and guns and hand them out to the local populace. Market it as, "The Anti-Great White Kit!"

No, he's not, Great Whites don't eat Humans naturally, so if you leave them they'll usaully leave you. Unless they get confused by how you look from underwater, in which case they may 'test bite' you to see if you are normal prey. Once they realise you are Human, they bugger off because they got it wrong. Most Shark 'Attack' fatalities are because the bitten person died of blood loss, not because the Shark swallowed it whole.

Jaws is not a good representation of a Great White Shark..

Anyway, cool, I'm loving the idea of Great Whites in our seas. I recently found out that there are Welsh Dolphins.
Now all we need are Wales and Giant Squid and we're complete!

Replace the guns with harpoon guns, and you're on! :)

they often hunt in artic water for seals etc and they find it easier as cold water holds more oxygen

Most Sharks actually hate eating humans including great whites. As far as I am aware the most a great white will probably do is test bite you if it misidentifies you and thinks you might be a seal but eat you whole? Probably not.

So stupid, it's just classic UK journalist sensationalism.

There have always been White Sharks in the Atlantic (they love cold, open waters and only travel into warmer waters close to shore during certain seasons; no one knows exactly how this all happens or when).

They've been seen off of Spain, France, and the Mediterranean sea for decades, is it that much of stretch that they would be off of UK waters as well? I mean, they supposedly swim off my state's shore (Florida) yet there have only been a handful of sightings that I've ever heard of. But they're out there and no ever makes a big deal out if it.

I understand that most sharks don't actively seek out humans, but let's face it, with a fish, their primary means of interaction is with biting, and even a little experimental nibble or misconstruing someone as being a threat could easily mean death. At least with smaller, nonvenomous animals, like wolves or cheetahs, an accidental bite is a bit less likely to remove a limb...

I just wouldn't expose myself to a predator like that if I didn't have to. I respect them, and find them graceful at times, but....

If you want to attract them, you're better off wearing a wet-suit filled with fish and throw a bucket of blood on you.

Indeed, they can't stand hickory-smoked condiments.

Oh, the Telegraph has a piece about something foreign running amok in the UK? That's unusual.

Anyway. I'm always very cautious of so-called "experts". Is he a marine biologist, a keen fisher, or a bloke down the pub?

I do hope this isn't going to become another UK stereotype, alongside bad teeth, and living off crumpets.

I once made the mistake of disrespecting a shark....

We dueled many times over many years. Sometimes with sabre, sometimes with rapier. Over time we forgot what the cause of the duel was. It was on the Russian front in winter fighting the Cossacks that we decided our final duel would be with pistols and so he came to me many years later at my estate in Sarlat-la-Canéda. The final duel was a pursuit through a ruin with each of us armed with a pair of dueling pistols. When the Le Grand Blanc missed his second shot, I immediately seized the initiative and cornered him at gunpoint. he was completely defenceless, with no hope of escape. However, instead of firing, I coldly informed him that I had decided to spare his life ? on condition that, since according to the rules of single combat his life now belongs to me, The Shark must now conduct himself in future as "dead" and must never have any further contact whatsoever with me ever again. The Shark had no choice but to submit to these terms and he departed and troubled me nevermore.....

So always respect Sharks kids.
