What is, in your opinion, the greatest horror movie ever made?

What makes a great horror movie? What scares you more; fear of the unknown or a memorable monster? Does a good horror movie make you jump out of your seat every three seconds or does it slowly and subtly raise the tension?

I don't know if it counts as a horror movie, but '28 days later' and '28 months later' scared the crap out of me. I think it was mostly the atmosphere, and the fact that it is technically possible.

John Carpenter's "The Thing" is possibly the greatest horror movie of all time. Its very suspenseful and has the weirdest goddamn monsters Ive ever seen.

I am going to say John Carpenter's "The Thing". I've watched it like 5 times and it still scares the crap out of me.

The Shining. The atmosphere and pacing of the film is pitch perfect. The sets look spectacular, the acting is great, it has plenty of memorable moments, and the film is creepy as all get out. One of the best films ever made.

Guillermo del Toro's Call of Cthulhu which released in late 2010 and was so horrifying, it created a rip in the time-space continuum. The master print of the film was lost forever, as were all of it's copies, after having fallen into said rip in Space Time. Before the rip was sealed, Boris Karloff and Bela Lugosi were seen for a moment as was Lon Chaney who clutched wildly at his throat. Before the rip closed completely, fire was seen and the only people who remember the event believe The Cthulhu Effect (as it is known) to be the true cause of the MGM vault fire of the early 60's.

Wouldn't that be something?

Greatest horror movie of all time though? I really couldn't say. My favorite is the first Nightmare on Elm Street but is it the best of all time? I couldn't say.

I was gonna say this too. It probably didn't help that I watched it at 1am in the pitch dark.

EDIT: By myself.

Ringu. The original version of The Ring.

For me that movie got the tension just right. There's only really one act of violence as such in the entire film but the feeling of dread it fills you with is amazing. It grips you in that horrible way where you want so badly to look away or turn it off but you're so ensnared by the urge to know what comes next you're literally paralyzed by your fear. Not only that, it had a good story also which kept me glued to the screen.

A good horror movie must have plot and the ability to build tension and know how to break it without shattering the unknown of fear. Modern horror movies seem to have lost the psychology aspect and just try to shock with violence and gore.

The original Nosferatu is my holy grail in horror movies. Love that film.

I don't know, they're all pretty meh to me with completely unlikeable characters. Only real exceptions are the movies adapted from Stephen King books.

EDIT: Oh yeah, and The Ring

"The Thing" is strong pretender to throne indeed.
But i'll vote for "Alien". It :
- is a great horror movie
- has good scenario
- is convincing (honestly, i believe that future spaceships would be void of plasma or lcd monitors)
- ages very well
- defined new border between old and modern SF movies

"Alien" !

Gotta agree with this guy. The Thing had excellent use of practical effects and still is creepy as hell.

People under the stairs.
A great thriller that messes with the mind. No scary/weird monsters not a lot of gore just good ol' fashioned psychological fuckery. This movie is the reason I am scared of creepy basements in old houses.

The Thing. It has great suspense, terrifying monsters and it really plays at fears of being alone and not able to trust anybody.
