Hello fellow Escapists, simple question. What is the greatest riff ever?
For me, it has to be AC/DC's Back in Black, that tune is epic.

The fast part of stairway after the solo.

DUH DUH. DUH DUH. DUH DU DUH DU DUH DU DUH DUH DUH.

I'm headbanging just thinking about it.

The greatest riff ever would have to be from the greatest rock song of all time, "You Really Got Me". The proper Kinks version, not the Van Halen cover.

It's as simple as you can get, there's no virtuosity here, no clever composition, just rock and roll distilled down to its purest essence. Everything posted in this thread so far is great and was written by truly gifted musicians, but it takes an incredible genius to be able to create something so powerfully infectious and unforgettable out of so little. Ray Davies is a god.

Welcome Home by Coheed and Cambria. Or In Keeping Secrets of Silent Earth: 3 by Coheed. The first riff of that song is just amazing.

P.S. how do I make it so that the video is here straight away, it would make things easier really

So iconic that it's used as the definition of the word "riff" (on Wikipedia):

You copy the bit after the equal sign, and put it in (youtube=thethingaftertheequalsign) with [ and ] (brackets) instead of parenthesis.

The last part of 'my friend of misery (part that kicks in at 4.60) from Metallica still rocks.
As mentioned above, Black sabbath also had it's dose of good riffs.

Christ, this could be so many things. I'll start with the obvious candidates: "Iron Man", "Crazy Train", "Layla", "Smoke on the Water", "Purple Haze", "When the Levee Breaks", "Master of Puppets", "Run to the Hills", etc.

In terms of the single riff that gets my blood pumping the most, that I can instantly recognize even from waaay far off in the distance, that makes me just want to get up and start rampaging... that would, oddly enough, have to be "Guarded," by Disturbed. Definitely not the greatest riff ever from an objective standpoint...but DAMN, that thing's catchy.
