http://kotaku.com/5885566/guild-wars-2-is-almost-certainly-coming-to-consoles

Whenever anyone says "man, I hate how all MMOs are the same", someone else invariably says "well, wait for Guild Wars 2, then!".

Normally, it's just been PC players waiting for the game, but console owners should get in line now as well.

Developers NCSoft have said in a recent conference call "When it comes to Guild Wars 2 [on consoles] as we have announced already, we are in the preparation stage"
One thing that's hurt MMO's on consoles (Particularly the 360) is the need to pay to play. As a 360 owner I refuse to pay twice for something. Guild Wars free-to-pay model could help it buck the trend. I'll be interested to see whether cross-platform play is implimented though as with Microsoft's closed network policy for XBox Live it's doubtful.

Oh gods... PLEASE, ANet, for the love of Dwayna, have DIFFERENT UIs!

I am now very afraid.

excuse me if I'm wrong but wasn't the final fantasy MMO on Xbox?

why would guild wars have trouble if it's been done years ago?

also I'm not getting my hopes up for guild wars. Every time a new MMO comes out it gets touted as the 'wow-killer' or the 'next big thing in gaming' when it inevitably isn't people start to complain.

Not to mention I flipping hate NCSoft, although my reasons involve subscriptions so I might get GW2 anyway since I won't have to worry about it.

Kotaku is being a bit over eager with that title...what ANet said was that they did have a small team working on a console version...but that doesn't guarantees one will ever get released, simply that they are testing out it's feasibility.

given the challenge of adapting the control scheme, I don't see it happening.

No, seriously. Just... What?

I can only see this being a disaster...
Guild Wars 2 already only has 10 skills and with it's more twitch based combat, it can work perfectly for it.

No need to change the UI. While it would need to change the UI somewhat (mainly for menus) but for the most part it can stay the same. Since it only has 10 skills, you can easily map all of them on the controller.

Since unlike MMO's like WoW there will be literally zero use for macro's. Since there isn't things like potions and such and isn't

A guy on MMORPG did a great pitcure at what the control scheme could be.

Except people don't say that, they say "well, wait for The Secret World then!" as that is truly a game that is set apart from the mold. GW2 just tries to look like it's different, but it will still feel like the same old fantasy dribble, just with a few new mechanics thrown in.

Then again, Kotaku wanks GW2 so hard that it's easy to get brain washed.
Honestly, I don't hear anyone saying "well, wait for The Secret World then!" You may hear one person say it. But honestly, it will fail. Even if it's good. It's going for pay to play. Guild Wars 2 is Buy to play which is a lot more attractive.

Plus GW2 is a hell of a lot more innovative then the Secret World.

Im not saying it wont work, im saying it wont sell.
DC Universe has more players on PS3 then PC. So it shows it can work.

NCSoft... Isn't making Guild Wars 2, ArenaNet is. NCSoft just produces but they have zero control over GW2.

There's a lot more to whether the control scheme will work than just the number of skills. Guild wars only had 8 skills, but it was a horrible experience on a control pad (using tools like xpadder).

The "twitch-based" combat isn't comforting, either... I guess I won't be getting my girlfriend to play with me like we did GW1. Damn it, I hope all that grinding to 50/50 wasn't a complete waste.

Edit: Looked at the linked image. OH MY GODS that's horrible. There's more to being a viable control scheme than just "having enough buttons."

And how many players is that?

Exactly. DC Universe was a bit of a failure all around.

Im not trying to moan about GW2 going to consoles, by the way - as long as the PC version doesnt suffer for it im glad more people can enjoy the game - I just cant see it being successful on consoles. And DC Universe? Haha. When trying to find an example of successful MMOs, DC Universe is the last place I would look.
Normally when someone asks a question and then says, Exactly. They actually wait for the person to respond. On PS3 of DCUO, it can be hard to get on. As there is a lot of players and when I try to get on, I need to wait for a que because of how many are on.

GW2 gameplay is not a lot like GW1. It's more action packed with real-time dodging and such and not clicking a target and both the player and enemy standing there attacking.

Also it's a good control scheme. May seem a bit complex but in pratice, it actually seems like it would work well.

It's not just complex. It's unintuitive. He has the skills scattered all over the place, including the horrible locations of "R-Click" and the D-pad? Plus, Can't jump and use Skill 5, Can't dodge and use the self-heal? No, unless you've got three hands (or two thumbs on each hand, maybe), that's a horrible mapping.

I imagine that if they do go the console route, more likely they'll use the marginally better approach of using either LT or LB as a "shift" toggle for the 4 color buttons and RT/RB being the 10 skills. That would make more sense. It would still be bad, but it wouldn't be the finger-tangling mess that guy came up with.

At least they seem to have the PC version as their focus and describe the PS3 one as a port, because some MMOs (lookin' at you, DCUO) have already demonstrated that designing an MMO UI with console standards in mind will just result in an interface that no self-respecting PC MMO player could ever be happy with. Wonder if the two platforms will get dedicated servers or if they're going cross-platform.

that controller scheme seems to be lacking the all important ability to actually select something on screen.

Fuck.
If Guild Wars 2 comes to console, then it'll probably quickly go down the drain.
... Unless they make seperate versions for PC and console users.
DCUO is a pain in the ass to play on a PC. The control scheme is horrible and there's so many things missing to make it enjoyable.
