Hi everyone.

I'm currently in the process of purchasing some items on Gumtree but since I don't live close to the seller we've organised to send them via post. My only problem is that I'm a little wary of this decision since payment will be made via paypal and I've heard this can be a little risky for Gumtree. I'm currently on the fence as to whether or not I should go through with this. I've talked to the seller and everything seems legit but I want to know if this is a good idea and if I'm guaranteed any sort of buyer protection from either Gumtree of Paypal if I don't end up receiving my items (This is Australian transaction btw, figured that should be known since terms and conditions may change by country).

Quick replies are highly appreciated.

As far as I'm aware Gumtree doesn't have any buyer protection. I think it's supposed to be the equivalent of a newspaper ads section. I'll double check the Australian ToS to see if my thinking is correct. (I'll post again after having a look)

PayPal does have buyer protection of some sort, however, I don't know what the limitations are. I think your situation should be covered, however, I'll double check that, too.

Second post, after I looked stuff up.

Gumtree actually very specifically mentions NOT offering any buyer protection: link [https://help.gumtree.com.au/knowledgebase.php?article=26&suggest=1] - it's point 5. which reads "Gumtree doesn't offer any sort of buyer protection / payment programs"

I'd look at the actual ToS, however, I trust their help information is up to date, so I won't bother.

Verdict - you are NOT covered by Gumtree (the Australian ToS)

https://www.paypal.com/au/webapps/m...1_PayPal_Seller_and_Buyer_Protection_Policies

Scroll to PayPal Buyer Protection Policy if you want to see the policy

However, the most relevant bit is in the Eligibility section, more specifically the requirements can be found under S12.1, under that section i. adresses what you are NOT eligible for. Subsection i. (of the i. section - it's a bit confusing when I just cite them) specifically mentions "Items listed on Gumtree." as being NOT eligible for buyer payment protection.

Verdict - you are NOT covered by PayPal. (the Australian ToS)

I hope this helps.

Thanks you for posting this information. It seems I might be on my own if something goes wrong.
