So I was playing half-life 2 and I found myself enjoying the first level quite a bit. I liked the whole citizen inside an oppressive government run city, the dilapidated housing and the authoritarian presence created a wonderful atmosphere. I had so much fun running from, and trying to undermine the combine that I wish the whole game could of been based on/in/around that idea(and remained in city 17).(instead of slowly turning into one man army gordon freeman vs the world)

I still go back and play the first level when I get the chance. The rest of the game (other than the outdoor sections of EP 2) was just sorta meh for me.

This thread isn't really about HL in particular but any games where a level in it just made you wish they based the actual game around it?

In Halo 3, I liked the assault on the scarabs. They seriously made me feel like I was in a warzone. Everything else (running around inside buildings and such) felt repetitive and didn't actually feel like I was accomplishing anything.

Mirror's Edge- The time trial levels made me wish the whole game was a rooftop adaptation of Crazy Taxi. Would have been fun actually being a covert, courier utilizing la parkour instead of a talking head for a mediocre revolutionary plot. Also wished the damn online system actually worked.

I wish Resident Evil 4 had focused on daytime horror more rather than switching over to the generic "creepy castle" garbage that you can find in any horror game. RE4 (and horror in general) is much scarier when scary things are happening in broad daylight, in my opinion.

TimeShift. The first couple levels were pretty badass, where you're fighting street-to-street in torrential rain while in a Soviet-style bloc city. With bullet-time. Your fellow militiamen will frequently make exclamations like "holy shit he's fast!" when you go on a slow-mo killing frenzy.

Yeah, that's usually how I feel about most games. You're introduced to a really incredible world with real problems and a general feeling of being a part of something.

Then, like all games you eventually become like you said, a one man army versus the world. It's still relatively fun, but you hardly feel a part of anything besides an extermination service for whoever gives you missions.

An example of this for me would be the Resident Evil series. Around the 4th installment it started getting ridiculous. In 1, 2 and even 3 you were presented with a horrible situation, but the way your character persevered and survived was still fairly believable. Now with Resident Evil 5 it's just an action crap-fest in my opinion. Things like Wesker being some sort of Metal Gear Solid ninja antagonist. That really put me off. Really, the whole game felt like a contrived Metal Gear story.

I kind of wish that all of GTAIV was spent bowling with my fat cousin

...Hmm...Not to be stuck on GTA, but I kind of liked playing as CJ in GTASA before he made it big time. My favorite point was when when you have access to San Fierro, before the last map is unlocked. The secret government missions and parachute entrance into Mad Dogs mansion are a bit much.

that game is awesome, the sad thing is, the first 70% isn't that good.

But yeah that rain soaked opressive state felt, homely.
