This is not a Halo bashing thread, I love the series, but as I was playing through ODST, I couldn't help but think that for everything they did right with the AI, the AI drivers just SUCK! They run into everything and make the worst possible decisions in the middle of a battle.

Has anyone ever come across a game where NPC characters piloting vehicles are actually competent? And not just a game where the whole point is piloting a vehicle like ace combat.

Halo 1, Halo 2, and Halo 3.
I love the series, but I always have to drive in single player.

You know... I honestly can't.

I mean, the allies are OKAY in Halo 2. The Covenant guys, I mean. The marines still suck at steering a Warthog.

Hey, I know one which.... Oh... Wait...

I'm guessing that driving AI is pretty hard to do. Each game that involves drivig has its flaws.

I agree, I always have to drive the AIs around so I don't get driven into a random wall way far away from where we were meant to be going.

Competent drivers eh? That one's a toughie. Operation Flashpoint perhaps (I don't see the kind of problems made by the drivers in the Halo series at any rate).

Dynamic Pathfinding is hard. I don't think any AI can actually operate a vehicle competently unless it's a fixed path.

Eva's motorcycle in mgs3 but to be fair it was a fixed route but then to be fairer she was hot and you were being chased by the SHAGOHOD (the sweetest metal gear ever)
The Shagohod isn't a metal gear.

It's still awesome though.

OP:Not of the top of my head,no

YES the AI driving has and always will suck, I wish they would do something about it though, to think of it though AI is poor in pretty much every game

The Star Wars: Battlefront series seemed to do it moderately well. Not outlandishly great, but good enough that it didn't come to mind as a problem. Although, it's hard to find AI for anything that's thinking about doing the same thing as you, so I usually don't go shotgun with an NPC at the wheel. It's more of a players mistake than the developers if you crash because an NPC is driving, in my opinion.

EDIT: Also, most games can do NPC driving better when the vehicle is slower. For example, you're not going anywhere letting an NPC drive a warthog, but they do fine in a Scorpion... unless it's a very uneven surface.

I don't know any, they all suck at driving. GTA:SA drivers weren't THAT bad, were they?
I played the first Halo game and i had to drive all the time.

Reason they suck is because the levels are pretty open as to where you can go(and what can happen in said lvls)(and less AI scripting), so considering the circumstances they actually do okay. Though susceptible to questionable choices lol.

The Warthog is in and of itself pretty tough to steer for an AI because the driving AI is meant to control the far sturdier and stable Ghosts, Wraiths and Banshees (As it is developed for the Covenant drivers firstly, and then applied to the Marines later). Warthogs have that uncanny knack for gliding like the wheels are made out of greased banana-peels and for obvious reasons the AI doesn't take that into consideration, ever.

Bad Company takes award for worst and best. Whenever youre on a turret, and someone in on the driver's seat, they sit there. However on the last level they drive like pros. (That's probaby just the programer's decision, but still...)

Hmm that's a good point, I don't seem to recall having too many difficulties with Saints Row 2... the drug trafficking missions involved you riding shotgun with the AI and they handled it pretty well.

I kept locking my friends in my apartment and forcing them to drive me around the map while I manned the turret.

Thank jebus that they added Xbox Live compatible campaign to Halo 3. It only took me 2 restraining orders and 1 new cross country move/new identity.
