Hi guys, my friends and fellow gamers.

Today one year of Doom 2016 has been completed. the game that define this generation. most beloved game on steam, Best FPS of last decade, and best game of the generation too has completed 1 year today (correct me if im wrong but doom 2016 i think was release on may 13 or 14 or 15. dont know exact date or im too late but better late than never).

in one year of journey. this game proof that how to do modern FPS. a proper PC old school FPS that resemble 90s shooter and how to fit in modern day too. this type of shooter are Id software can done.

the game is Masterpiece. today very few. i mean very few games impress me that much as you all know how critical i am for games.

I dont even think this game will be surpass any time soon.

I hope this year E3 at bethesda conference. Id software announced a sequel and steal the show.

what do you think guys? lets celebrate the anniversary and discuss its success, impact on other games. will it success lead to make more FPS games great like late 90s and early 00s again?

I picture B-Cell, sitting in his underpants, alone in his living room, with a party hat on, sadly blowing a party whistle, cutting a cake that says "RIP AND TEAR" with a marzipan Doom Marine on top.

It was a'ight.

Once I bumped up the difficulty it became MUCH better. The gameplay itself was borderline perfection so once I bumped up the challenge (which shifted the focus to the gameplay), the game became much much better.

A virtually non-existent story (that still managed to have a "Fuck you player" cliff hanger of an ending) with a boring protagonist and poor level design (oh hey, ANOTHER locked room where I get to run around until everything dies before I get to go to the next locked room until everything dies before I go into the next locked room until everything dies) keeps it from being the best FPS, let alone the best game ever...

It was a very good 90s FPS. If that's all you want, then it delivered in spades. Right now, Doom has a great foundation set but didn't build on it, settling for a REALLY nice foundation. I hope they take that foundation and build themselves an equally well put together house.

From a rare serious point in response to B-Cell:

How did it define a generation? Wouldn't there need to be a significant attempt to copy or adopt features for this to be true? What games clearly have been inspired and shaped by doom, 1 year later?

That game was dull.

Run in circles, click in general direction of enemies, press the insta-kill health pinata button like a good dog whenever something flashes blue. Repeat until credits.

I stopped playing when I realised that I wasn't even bothering to select weapons any more. It didn't matter beyond which ones required me to spam left click and which required me to hold down left click.

4/10 game. Rather monotonous. 7/10 insomnia cure. Made me moderately sleepy.

Okay, I'll play.

Usually you wait for a generation to end before making any declarations of what defined it.

Yeah, no. It isn't even that good a game.

Nup.

Maybe one type of FPS, but there's too much room for improvement to call it definitive.

No, I know how biased you are towards certain games, not how critical you are. There's a difference.

It didn't surpass that much when it was first released.

But everything being said, I wouldn't mind a sequel to Doom 2016. There's a solid concept in there somewhere, it just needs to improve its weak points (less sense of artificiality in its arenas, less repetitive combat, improve its story, etc.)

I think it might be nice to discuss anything other than Doom.

I want a cap that says "make FPS great again!"

I'm not even gonna touch this bait. Usually, B-Cell is kind of believable in his crazy convictions, but it's pretty obvious he's just trying to rustle jimmies here. I wouldn't be surprised if he didn't even like Doom that much.
I'm pretty sure, based on his other Doom threads, that he gargles and swallows whatever Doom is giving. And if I'm honest, Doom was at least the best game of 2016 probably. 2016 was a rather bad year though.

It definitely isn't the all-mighty game from the Gods that B-Cell thinks. But I don't know how much B-Cell actually thinks anymore. I want to think he is just a giant troll, but I fear he might be serious.

It's a decent shooter marred by lackluster enemy variety, non-challenging encounters and a forgettable plot.
The combat devolves into mindless circle-strafing and kill-everything-to-proceed scenarios. The only weapon with a satisfactory feel was the Gauss Cannon. For me, this was tiresome and predictable.
The level-design? It's functional. That's it really, no particular encounter or level had any staying power.

For a throwback to the old-school style of FPS, it does little to innovate in the genre.
For a game that marries old-school sensibilities with modern design, with an earnest narrative appeal and a protagonist I never expected to care about: Wolfenstein: The New Order did it far better.

---

EDIT: For a Metroid shout-out at the end and a small character twist, it would be great if the Doom Marine removed their helmet to reveal a striking resemblance to Samus Aran. B-Cell would be delighted with a female protagonist.

new order did nothing better. it was call of wolfenstien. its more of cutscene fest, scripted follow linear path, slow gameplay, forced stealth segments etc.

new order was terrible FPS game.

I totally forgot this game came out. And while I haven't played it, I can tell you all that it was utter shit.

Doom is older than that, sweetie-pie-kins. And Shadow Warrior was more colourful and fun, that innovated and invigorated my desire for more games to implement the irreplaceable 'stroke-your-blade-quick-and-lovingly-like' button.
Maybe a future game can one-up the idea to a 'lick-your-blade-quick-and-suggestively-like' button. Can't be that much hard work, can it?

Pretty much this. The game is so dull. I'm all for a good shooter. I loved Wolfenstein: The New Order and The Old Blood, but Doom is just dreadfully fuckin' boring. The levels are boring to look at, the weapons are boring to shoot and the enemies are boring to kill. The game didn't do anything for me. It runs great, and it's a perfect example of what can be achieved with Vulkan API, but that's about it. It's a glorified tech demo.

And yeah, best shooter in the recent years IMO is Shadow Warrior reboot. God I love that game.

Surprisingly enough, I did not like Shadow Warrior reboot. Yet, I would take it over any COD, Battlefield, or the recent Far Cry game.

Doom (2016) I liked, but it's still got nothing on Serious Sam. I loved Wolfenstein: TNO order, but did have some flaws. While I slightly prefer Doom (2016) over it, you can't go wrong with either one. It's a win-win scenario, for me at least.
