As in topic, have you ever played a game that was just terribly hard to understand at first (the control scheme, overall plot and WHAT THE HELL AM I SUPPOSED TO DO) but when you got through that first barrier became extremely easy to master (not easy overall just easy to master)?

For me that kind of game was X3. I bounced off it twice because of the ridiculous (at the time) control scheme and the fact that I found it super hard to earn some real cash. But than after playing it for one day (for real this time) getting over the controls and actually starting to do shit... I like sucked all the knowledge about it at one go and became the ultimate master of the universe at one go (well not really but you get the point).

So, ever had a game like that?

I'm gonna say Dwarf Fortress. Man, I wish I had the patience to learn that game, but the learning curve is such a sheer cliff, that I just can't be fucked. I can imagine it'd all come together at a certain point though.

Well I have to say Batman: Arkham Asylum. The combat is very simple, however it takes a lot of practice to get it down to the beautiful dance that it is at the end of the game.

Edit: Oh, my bad misread the topic.

Well then, I would have to say sport games such as Skate or Shawn White Snowboarding.

Tony hawks....games.

although this is rather insulting to my gaming habit, I'm quite happily to say I button-bashed through out the game

Psychonauts. After figuring out how to use all of the powers, I quickly mastered juggling the different abilities.

The amount of people misreading the title of this thread amuses me greatly.

OT: I am going to have to say the Hitman games. They seem very unforgiving at first but once you understand everything it all makes sense.

EVE Online. That game is ridiculously easy once you know which 5 dropdowns you need to go through to get the flowchart of what will be necessary for you to remove the item from your cargo bay.

No, someone didn't have to say it. I'm sure there are millions of things you could have said but, no you had to say the old "Your mum" joke. Seriously get some originality.
Well he could have said "That's what she said" at the end. That would make it even worse.

Star fleet Command III

It get easier once you get out of the FF category and when you get to DN class ships you fall alseep shooting starbases

it gets frustrating with a BB because they are the only ship that can collide with stuff and your AI partners are a bunch of morons but the only ship that dose that is the cube

Dragon Age.

Once you realise you should be pausing with the radial menus all the time it makes the game a lot less tough.

It's still no cakewalk, mind you.

Thank goodness for Cone of Cold.

Dead Rising. The problem came rather late, the Isabella fight, but once you could get past that sheer mountain peak of difficulty, the game almost played itself.

Resonance of Fate. I've seen my fair share of reviews that claim it has a steep learning curve, whereas the only issues I had was to repeat a couple of tutorial lessons to make sure I understood it and fighting out in the field gave it the practice it needed.

Well, I laughed to myself, so apparently at least one person thought it was funny.
Anyway, I think that Mass Effect 2 takes it, for me. It took so long for me to finally get the hang of all the squad commands, cover sytem, etc. After I did, though, it was a hop, skip, and a jump to kicking ass and taking names the way I knew I could.

took me a while to get used to sword combat in Oblivion, as well as using spells in combat effectively, but once you learn how to do it nicely, it flows pretty well
